✧ The Battle between Muḍar and al-Yaman in Khurāsān It is said: In the year one hundred and six occurred the battle between the Muḍarīs and the Yamānīs at al-Burūqān in the land of Balkh. The cause of that was that Muslim b. Saʿīd b. Aslam b. Zurʿah went on a raid, and the people were slow to join him. Among those who were slow to join him was al-Bakhtarī b. Dirham. Muslim sent back Naṣr b. Sayyār, Balʿāʾ b. Mujāhid, and others to Balkh, ordering them to drive out the people. Naṣr burned the gate of al-Bakhtarī and Ziyād b. Ṭarīf al-Bāhilī. ʿAmr b. Muslim, the brother of Qutaybah, who was governor of Balkh, prevented them from entering Balkh. Muslim b. Saʿīd cut off the river crossing, and Naṣr b. Sayyār encamped at al-Burūqān. The people of al-Ṣaghāniyān, Maslamah al-Tamīmī, Ḥassān b. Khālid al-Asadī, and others came to him. Rabīʿah and al-Azd gathered at al-Burūqān, half a parasang from Naṣr. Muḍar went out to Naṣr, and Rabīʿah and al-Azd went out to ʿAmr b. Muslim b. ʿAmr. Taghlib sent word to ʿAmr b. Muslim: "You are one of us," and they recited to him a poem composed by a man who traced Bāhilah's lineage back to Taghlib. The Banū Qutaybah were of Bāhilah, but ʿAmr did not accept that. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim and Yazīd b. al-Mufaḍḍal al-Ḥuddānī traveled to negotiate peace, and they spoke with Naṣr, and he turned back. Then the companions of ʿAmr b. Muslim and al-Bakhtarī charged Naṣr, and Naṣr counter-charged them. The first man killed was a man of Bāhilah from the companions of ʿAmr b. Muslim, among eighteen men. ʿAmr was defeated, and he sent to seek safe-conduct from Naṣr, who granted it to him. It is said: They found ʿAmr in a mill, and they brought him to Naṣr with a rope around his neck. He granted him safe-conduct, flogged him with one hundred lashes, and flogged al-Bakhtarī and Ziyād b. Ṭarīf each with one hundred lashes, shaved their heads and beards, and clothed them in sackcloth. It is said that the rout was at first upon Naṣr and those Muḍarīs with him. ʿAmr b. Muslim said to a man of Tamīm who was with him: "How do you see the buttocks of your people, O brother of Tamīm?" taunting him with that. Then Tamīm counter-charged and routed the companions of ʿAmr, and the Tamīmī said to ʿAmr: "These are the buttocks of my people." It is said that the cause of ʿAmr's defeat was that Rabīʿah was with ʿAmr, and a group of them and of al-Azd were killed. Rabīʿah said: "Why should we fight our own brothers and our commander? We have drawn near to ʿAmr and he has denied our kinship." So they withdrew, and al-Azd and ʿAmr were routed. Then Naṣr granted them safe-conduct and ordered them to join Muslim b. Saʿīd.
