الْبَيْعَةِ بِوِلَايَةِ الْعَهْدِ لِهِشَامٍ وَالْوَلِيدِ لَمَّا وَجَّهَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْجُيُوشَ إِلَى يَزِيدَ بْنِ الْمُهَلَّبِ، وَاسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَى الْجَيْشِ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَخَاهُ، وَالْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَهُوَ ابْنُ أَخِيهِ، قَالَا لَهُ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْعِرَاقِ أَهْلُ غَدْرٍ وَإِرْجَافٍ، وَقَدْ تَوَجَّهْنَا مُحَارِبِينَ وَالْحَوَادِثُ تَحْدُثُ، وَلَا نَأْمَنُ أَنْ يَرْجُفَ أَهْلُ الْعِرَاقِ، وَيَقُولُوا: مَاتَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَيَفُتُّ ذَلِكَ فِي أَعَضَادِنَا، فَلَوْ عَهِدْتَ عَهْدَ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ لَكَانَ رَأْيًا صَوَابًا. فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ مَسْلَمَةَ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ، فَأَتَى أَخَاهُ يَزِيدَ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَيُّمَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيْكَ أَخُوكَ أَمِ ابْنُ أَخِيكَ ؟ فَقَالَ: بَلْ أَخِي. فَقَالَ: فَأَخُوكَ أَحَقُّ بِالْخِلَافَةِ. فَقَالَ يَزِيدُ: إِذَا لَمْ تَكُنْ فِي وَلَدِي فَأَخِي أَحَقُّ بِهَا مِنِ ابْنِ أَخِي كَمَا ذَكَرْتَ. قَالَ: فَابْنُكَ لَمْ يَبْلُغْ فَبَايِعْ لِهِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ثُمَّ بَعْدَهُ لِابْنِكَ الْوَلِيدِ، وَكَانَ الْوَلِيدُ يَوْمَئِذٍ ابْنُ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ سَنَةً، فَبَايَعَ بِوِلَايَةِ الْعَهْدِ لِهِشَامِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَخِيهِ، وَبَعْدَهُ لِابْنِهِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، ثُمَّ عَاشَ يَزِيدُ حَتَّى بَلَغَ ابْنُهُ الْوَلِيدُ، فَكَانَ إِذَا رَآهُ يَقُولُ: اللَّهُ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَ مَنْ جَعَلَ هِشَامًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكَ.
Translation
✧ The Oath of Allegiance to the Succession of Hishām and al-Walīd When Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik dispatched the armies against Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, and appointed over the army his brother Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and al-ʿAbbās b. al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who was his nephew, they said to him: “O Commander of the Faithful, the people of Iraq are people of treachery and agitation. We have set out to fight, and events may occur, and we do not feel safe that the people of Iraq will stir up unrest and say, ‘The Commander of the Faithful has died,’ and that would weaken our resolve. If only you would designate the succession of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Walīd, that would be the right course.” That reached Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik, so he went to his brother Yazīd and said: “O Commander of the Faithful, which is dearer to you, your brother or your nephew?” He said: “Rather, my brother.” He said: “Then your brother is more entitled to the caliphate.” Yazīd said: “If it is not to be among my children, then my brother is more entitled to it than my nephew, as you mentioned.” He said: “Your son has not yet reached maturity, so give the oath of allegiance to Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, then after him to your son al-Walīd.” At that time al-Walīd was eleven years old. So he gave the oath of allegiance to the succession of his brother Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and after him to his son al-Walīd b. Yazīd. Then Yazīd lived until his son al-Walīd reached maturity, and when he saw him he would say: “May God judge between me and the one who placed Hishām between me and you.”
