Translation

✧ The appointment of Saʿīd Khudhayna over Khurasan by Maslama Maslama appointed over Khurasan Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. al-Ḥārith b. al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayya, who was called Saʿīd Khudhayna. He was given that nickname because he was a soft, luxurious man. The king of Abghar entered upon him while Saʿīd was in dyed clothes, with dyed cushions around him. When he left his presence, they said: "How did you see the amir?" He said: "Khudhayna." So he was nicknamed Khudhayna, and Khudhayna is the dihqāna, the mistress of the house. Saʿīd had married Maslama's daughter, so for this reason Maslama appointed him over Khurasan. When Maslama appointed Saʿīd over Khurasan, he went there and appointed Shuʿba b. Ẓuhayr al-Nahshalī over Samarqand. He went there and arrived in Sughd. Its people had apostatized during the governorship of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nuʿaym, then returned to the peace agreement. Shuʿba addressed the people of Sughd and rebuked its inhabitants, both Arabs and others, for cowardice, saying: "I do not see among you a wounded man, nor do I hear a groan." They excused themselves by saying that they had made their amir ʿIlbāʾ b. Ḥabīb al-ʿAbdī a coward. Saʿīd seized the agents of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh who had been appointed during the days of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He imprisoned them then released them. Then it was reported to Saʿīd that Jahm b. Zaḥr al-Juʿfī, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj al-Zubaydī, and al-Muntajiʿ b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Azdī had been appointed by Yazīd b. al-Muhallab among eight men, and they had with them wealth that they had embezzled [from the fayʾ of the Muslims. He sent for them] and imprisoned them in the citadel of Marw. He carried Jahm b. Zaḥr on a donkey and paraded him, then struck him with two hundred lashes. He ordered him and the eight who were imprisoned with him to be handed over to Warqāʾ b. Naṣr al-Bāhilī, who asked to be excused, and he excused him. Then he handed them over to ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Dithār, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Dithār, and al-Zubayr b. Nashīṭ, a mawlā of Bāhila. They killed under torture Jahm b. Zaḥr, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and al-Muntajiʿ, and they tortured al-Qaʿqāʿ and a group until they were near death. They remained in prison until the Turks and the Sughd attacked them. Saʿīd ordered their release, and he used to say: "May God make al-Zubayr ugly, for he killed Jahm!"
