Translation
✧ In this year ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent al-Walīd b. Hishām al-Muʿayṭī and ʿAmr b. Qays al-Kindī on the summer expedition. From Juwayriyah, from Ismāʿīl b. Abī Ḥakīm, who said: ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent me, when he became caliph, to negotiate the ransom of prisoners. While I was walking about in Constantinople, I heard a voice singing, saying: I lay awake, and the one who would blame me was absent, but I did not sleep, I and the cares. It is as if I, from remembering what I endure, when the dark night grows black, am a sick man whom his nearest have wearied of, and whom the healer and the close friend have bidden farewell. And how many, in the open land between al-Munaqqā and Uḥud, to the water of Zarīm, to al-Jammāʾ, from a smooth cheek, pure in color, with no scars upon it, light up the darkness when it appears, like the light of dawn; his appearance is handsome. Then when departure drew near to us, and the approach of swift she-camels, sturdy and large-humped, they came to bid farewell, while the mounts upon their saddles were lean and swift. One would speak and praise us, saying—though she has no close friend among us—and another whose heart is with us, but she conceals it, silent and choking with grief. She counts the nights for us, reckoning them: when is a coming from us expected? When she sees the slanderers heedless of us, the eye that sheds abundant tears gives freely. Al-Zubayr said: The poetry is by Buqaylah al-Ashjaʿī. Ismāʿīl b. Abī Ḥakīm said: I asked him when I entered upon him, saying to him: Who are you? He said: I am al-Wābiṣī, who was taken and tortured, and I despaired and entered into their religion. I said: The Commander of the Believers ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent me to ransom prisoners, and you, by God, are the dearest of those whom I have ransomed, except that you have not become deeply rooted in unbelief. He said: By God, I have become deeply rooted in unbelief. I said: I adjure you by God, become a Muslim. He said: I shall become a Muslim, but these are my two sons, and I have married a woman, and these are her two sons. When I enter Madinah, one of them will say: O Christian, and the same will be said to my children and their mother [and their children]. No, by God, I will not do it. I said to him: You used to be a reciter of the Qurʾān. He said: By God, I am one of the most proficient reciters of the Qurʾān. I said: What of the Qurʾān remains with you? He said: Nothing except this verse: 'Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims' (Q 15:2). In this year ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz appointed ʿUmar b. Hubayrah al-Fazārī over al-Jazīrah as governor over them. (In this year ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz appointed Ismāʿīl b. ʿAbd Allāh, client of Banū Makhzūm, over Ifrīqiyah, and he appointed al-Samḥ b. Mālik al-Khawlānī over al-Andalus. He had seen trustworthiness and religiosity in him in the presence of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, so he appointed him.) In this year a plague occurred, and it was called the plague of ʿAdī b. Arṭāh.
