Then the Year Seventy-Eight Began
جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَرَامٍ وَقَدْ تُوُفِّيَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ مِنَ الْأَعْيَانِ: جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ حَرَامٍ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، الْأَنْصَارِيُّ السُّلَمِيُّ، صَاحِبُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، وَلَهُ رِوَايَاتٌ كَثِيرَةٌ، وَشَهِدَ الْعَقَبَةَ، وَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَشْهَدَ بَدْرًا فَمَنَعَهُ أَبُوهُ، وَخَلَّفَهُ عَلَى أَخَوَاتِهِ وَإِخْوَتِهِ، وَكَانُوا تِسْعَةً، وَقِيلَ: إِنَّهُ ذَهَبَ بَصَرُهُ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ. تُوُفِّيَ جَابِرٌ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَعُمْرُهُ أَرْبَعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ سَنَةً، وَأَسْنَدَ أَلْفًا وَخَمْسَمِائَةٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ حَدِيثًا. شُرَيْحُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ شُرَيْحُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، أَبُو أُمَيَّةَ، الْكِنْدِيُّ وَهُوَ قَاضِي الْكُوفَةِ، وَقَدْ تَوَلَّى الْقَضَاءَ لِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، وَعُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ، وَعَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، ثُمَّ عَزَلَهُ عَلِيٌّ، ثُمَّ وَلَّاهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ، ثُمَّ اسْتَقَلَّ فِي الْقَضَاءِ، إِلَى أَنْ مَاتَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ، وَكَانَ رِزْقُهُ عَلَى الْقَضَاءِ فِي كُلِّ شَهْرٍ مِائَةَ دِرْهَمٍ، وَقِيلَ: خَمْسَمِائَةِ دِرْهَمٍ. وَكَانَ إِذَا خَرَجَ إِلَى الْقَضَاءِ يَقُولُ: سَيَعْلَمُ الظَّالِمُ حَظَّ مَنْ نَقَصَ. وَقِيلَ: إِنَّهُ كَانَ إِذَا جَلَسَ لِلْقَضَاءِ قَرَأَ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ: يَا دَاوُدُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاكَ خَلِيفَةً فِي الْأَرْضِ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ الْهَوَى ( ص: 26 ) الْآيَةَ، وَكَانَ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ الظَّالِمَ يَنْتَظِرُ الْعِقَابَ، وَالْمَظْلُومَ يَنْتَظِرُ النَّصْرَ، أَوِ الْمَثُوبَةَ. وَقِيلَ لَهُ: كَيْفَ أَصْبَحْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ: كَيْفَ يُصْبِحُ حَالُ مَنْ شَطْرُ النَّاسِ عَلَيْهِ غَضْبَانُ ؟ وَقِيلَ: إِنَّهُ مَكَثَ قَاضِيًا نَحْوَ سَبْعِينَ سَنَةً. وَقِيلَ: إِنَّهُ اسْتُعْفِيَ مِنَ الْقَضَاءِ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ بِسَنَةٍ، فَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ. وَأَصْلُهُ مِنْ أَوْلَادِ الْفَرَسِ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا بِالْيَمَنِ، وَقَدِمَ الْمَدِينَةَ بَعْدَ مَوْتِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، وَتُوُفِّيَ بِالْكُوفَةِ، وَعُمْرُهُ مِائَةٌ وَثَمَانِ سِنِينَ. عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ غَنْمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ غَنْمٍ الْأَشْعَرِيُّ نَزِيلُ فِلَسْطِينَ، وَقَدْ رَوَى عَنْ جَمَاعَةٍ مِنَ الصَّحَابَةِ، وَقِيلَ: إِنَّ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ. وَقَدْ بَعَثَهُ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ إِلَى الشَّامِ ; لِيُفَقِّهَ أَهْلَهَا فِي الدِّينِ، وَكَانَ مِنَ الْعُبَّادِ الصَّالِحِينَ. جُنَادَةُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ الْأَزْدِيُّ جُنَادَةُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ الْأَزْدِيُّ شَهِدَ فَتْحَ مِصْرَ، وَكَانَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى غَزْوِ الْبَحْرِ لِمُعَاوِيَةَ، وَكَانَ مَوْصُوفًا بِالشَّجَاعَةِ وَالْخَيْرِ، تُوُفِّيَ بِالشَّامِ وَقَدْ قَارَبَ الثَّمَانِينَ. الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ الْعَلَاءُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ كَانَ مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ الْعُبَّادِ، مِنْ أَهْلِ الْبَصْرَةِ، وَكَانَ كَثِيرَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْوَرَعِ، وَكَانَ يَعْتَزِلُ فِي بَيْتِهِ، وَلَا يُخَالِطُ النَّاسَ، وَكَانَ كَثِيرَ الْبُكَاءِ، لَمْ يَزَلْ يَبْكِي حَتَّى عَمِيَ، وَلَهُ مَنَاقِبُ كَثِيرَةٌ، تُوُفِّيَ بِالْبَصْرَةِ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ. سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مِرْدَاسٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ سُرَاقَةُ بْنُ مِرْدَاسٍ الْأَزْدِيُّ كَانَ شَاعِرًا مُطْبِقًا، هَجَا الْحَجَّاجَ فَنَفَاهُ إِلَى الشَّامِ، فَتُوُفِّيَ بِهَا. أيضًا ممن توفوا في هذه السنة النَّابِغَةُ الْجَعْدِيُّ الشَّاعِرُ السَّائِبُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْكِنْدِيُّ وَتُوُفِّيَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ: سُفْيَانُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ الْأَسَدِيُّ مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ قُرَّةَ الْبَصْرِيُّ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ مَاتَ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْقَارِيُّ وَلَهُ ثَمَانٍ وَسَبْعُونَ سَنَةً ، وَمَسَحَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ بِرَأْسِهِ. ( الْقَارِيُّ بِالْيَاءِ الْمُشَدَّدَةِ ). وَفِيهَا مَاتَ زَيْدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيُّ ، وَقِيلَ غَيْرُ ذَلِكَ.
Translation
✧ Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām And in this year passed away of the notable figures: Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ḥarām Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the Anṣārī al-Sulamī, companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He had many narrations. He witnessed al-ʿAqabah. He desired to witness Badr, but his father prevented him and left him behind to look after his sisters and brothers, and they were nine. It is said that he lost his sight before his death. Jābir died in al-Madīnah at the age of ninety-four years, and he narrated one thousand five hundred and forty ḥadīths. Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays, Abū Umayyah, al-Kindī He was the judge of al-Kūfah. He held the judiciary for ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, and ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. Then ʿAlī dismissed him. Then Muʿāwiyah appointed him. Then he continued in the judiciary until he died in this year. His stipend for the judiciary was one hundred dirhams per month, and it is said: five hundred dirhams. When he went out to judge he would say: "The wrongdoer will know the lot of the one who diminishes." It is said that when he sat to judge he would recite this verse: "O David, indeed We have made you a vicegerent in the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow desire" (Ṣād: 26), the verse. And he would say: "The wrongdoer awaits punishment, and the wronged awaits victory or reward." It was said to him: "How have you become this morning?" He said: "How can the state of one become morning when half the people are angry with him?" It is said that he remained a judge for about seventy years. It is said that he was excused from the judiciary one year before his death, and God knows best. His origin was from the children of the Persians who were in al-Yaman. He came to al-Madīnah after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, and he died in al-Kūfah at the age of one hundred and eight years. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghanm al-Ashʿarī ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghanm al-Ashʿarī A resident of Palestine. He narrated from a group of the Companions, and it is said that he had companionship. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb sent him to Syria to teach its people jurisprudence in religion, and he was among the righteous worshippers. Junādah b. Abī Umayyah al-Azdī Junādah b. Abī Umayyah al-Azdī He witnessed the conquest of Egypt, and he was commander of the naval raids for Muʿāwiyah. He was described as courageous and good. He died in Syria when he was close to eighty. Al-ʿAlāʾ b. Ziyād al-Baṣrī Al-ʿAlāʾ b. Ziyād al-Baṣrī He was among the righteous worshippers, from the people of al-Baṣrah. He was of great fear and piety. He used to seclude himself in his house and not mix with people. He wept much; he kept weeping until he became blind. He had many virtues. He died in al-Baṣrah in this year. Surāqah b. Mirdās al-Azdī Surāqah b. Mirdās al-Azdī He was a skilled poet. He satirized al-Ḥajjāj, who exiled him to Syria, and he died there. Also among those who died in this year Al-Nābighah al-Jaʿdī the poet Al-Sāʾib b. Yazīd al-Kindī And in this year died Sufyān b. Salamah al-Asadī Muʿāwiyah b. Qurrah al-Baṣrī And in this year died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qārī at the age of seventy-eight years, and the Prophet ﷺ wiped his head. (Al-Qārī with a doubled yāʾ). And in it died Zayd b. Khālid al-Juhanī, though a different date is also said.
