Translation

✧ The dispatching of Ibn Ziyād and Ḥubaysh In the year sixty-five, Marwān b. al-Ḥakam sent out two expeditions: one of them with ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād to the Jazīrah and to fight Zufar b. al-Ḥārith at Qarqīsiyā. He appointed him over all that he might conquer, so that when he finished with the Jazīrah he would turn to make for Iraq and take it from Ibn al-Zubayr. When he was in the Jazīrah, the death of Marwān reached him, and the letter of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān came to him appointing him over what his father had appointed him over and urging him to march to Iraq. The other expedition was to Madinah with Ḥubaysh b. Dalajah al-Qaynī. He marched with them until he reached Madinah, over which was Jābir b. al-Aswad b. ʿAwf, the nephew of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, on behalf of Ibn al-Zubayr, and Jābir fled from him. Then al-Ḥārith b. Abī Rabīʿah—he being the brother of ʿAmr b. Abī Rabīʿah—sent an army from Basra, for he was governor over it for Ibn al-Zubayr, and placed over them al-Ḥunayf b. al-Naḥaf al-Taymī to fight Ḥubaysh. When Ḥubaysh heard of them, he marched to them from Madinah, and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr sent al-ʿAbbās b. Sahl b. Saʿd al-Sāʿidī to Madinah as amir and ordered him to march in pursuit of Ḥubaysh until he should meet the army from the people of Basra over whom was al-Ḥunayf. Al-ʿAbbās went forward following their tracks until he caught up with them at al-Rabadhah. Ḥubaysh fought them, and Yazīd b. Sinān shot him with an arrow and killed him. With him that day were Yūsuf b. al-Ḥakam and his son al-Ḥajjāj, both on a single camel, and his companions were routed, and five hundred of them took refuge in Madinah. Al-ʿAbbās b. Sahl said: "Come down upon my judgment." So they came down, and he killed them. The remnant of Ḥubaysh's force returned to Syria. When Yazīd b. Sinān entered Madinah, he was wearing white garments, and they turned black from the people wiping against him and from the perfume they poured on him.
