✧ The pledge of allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, the two sons of Marwān, as heirs apparent. In the year sixty-five, Marwān b. al-Ḥakam ordered the people of Syria to conclude the pledge of allegiance to his two sons, ʿAbd al-Malik and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and made them his heirs apparent. Marwān had sent ʿAmr b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ against Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr when his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr dispatched him to Palestine, and he defeated Ibn al-Zubayr and returned to Marwān in Damascus. Marwān learned that ʿAmr was saying: "This affair is mine after Marwān." So Marwān summoned Ḥassān b. Mālik b. Baḥdal and informed him that he wanted to take the pledge for his two sons, ʿAbd al-Malik and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and told him what had reached him about ʿAmr. Ḥassān said: "I will spare you ʿAmr." When the people gathered before Marwān in the evening, Ḥassān stood up and said: "It has reached us that some men are entertaining wishes. Rise and pledge allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik, and to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz after him." So they pledged allegiance, all of them to the last.
