Translation

✧ The Death of Marwān b. al-Ḥakam In the month of Ramaḍān of the year sixty-five Marwān b. al-Ḥakam died. The cause of his death was that when Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd was at the point of death, he did not appoint anyone as successor. Ḥassān b. Biḥdal wanted to place the affair after him in his brother Khālid b. Yazīd, and he was young. Ḥassān was the maternal uncle of his father Yazīd. Ḥassān gave allegiance to Marwān b. al-Ḥakam, intending to place the affair after him in Khālid. When he and the people of Syria gave allegiance to him, it was said to Marwān: Marry the mother of Khālid, who is the daughter of Abū Hāshim b. ʿUtbah, so that his standing may be diminished and he will not seek the caliphate. So he married her. One day Khālid entered upon Marwān while a group was with him, and he was walking between two rows. Marwān said: By God, you are indeed a fool! Come here, O son of the moist one of the anus! He belittled him in order to make him fall from the eyes of the people of Syria. Khālid returned to his mother and informed her. She said to him: Let no one know of that from you except me. I shall suffice you against him. Marwān entered upon her and said to her: Did Khālid say anything to you about me? She said: No; he holds you in too much esteem to say anything about you. He believed her and remained some days. Then one day Marwān slept at her place, and she covered him with a pillow until she killed him. He died, and that was on the third of the month of Ramaḍān in the year sixty-five in Damascus. He was sixty-three years of age. It is also said: sixty-one, and it is said: eighty-one years. His rule was nine months. It is also said: ten months less three days. ʿAbd al-Malik wanted to kill the mother of Khālid, but it was said to him: It will become known among the people that a woman killed your father, so he left her alone. When Marwān died, his son ʿAbd al-Malik took charge of the affairs of Syria after him. His son ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was in Egypt in obedience to his brother ʿAbd al-Malik. ʿAbd al-Malik was born after seven months, and people used to disparage him for that. It is said that a group of nobles gathered with him, and he said to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād b. Ẓabyān al-Bakrī: I have heard that you do not resemble your father. He said: Indeed, by God, I resemble him as water resembles water and as a crow resembles a crow. But if you wish, I will tell you of one whom wombs did not bring to full term, who was not born complete, and who did not resemble maternal or paternal uncles. He said: Who is that? He said: Suwayd b. Manjūf. When ʿUbayd Allāh and Suwayd went out, Suwayd said to him: It would not please me, in exchange for your words to him, to have red camels. ʿUbayd Allāh said: By God, it would not please me, in exchange for your bearing with me and your silence, to have black ones.
