Creation of the heavens and the earth
أَوَّلِ مَنْ سَكَنَ الْأَرْضَ أَوَّلُ مَنْ سَكَنَ الْأَرْضَ الْجِنُّ ، وَمَا زَالُوا يُعَمِّرُونَ الْأَرْضَ وَيَعْبُدُونَ اللَّهَ -عَزَّ وَجَلَّ- حَتَّى طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ، فَيَتَنَاوَلُ بَعْضُهُمْ بَعْضًا، فَنَهَاهُمْ بَعْضُ مُلُوكِهِمْ، وَاسْمُهُ يُوسُفُ، وَيُقَالُ إِنَّهُ كَانَ نَبِيًّا، وَلَا يَثْبُتُ مِثْلُ هَذَا، فَأَرْسَلَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ جُنْدًا مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ فِيهِمْ إِبْلِيسُ، فَأَجْلَوْهُمْ عَنِ الْأَرْضِ. وَرَوَى الضَّحَّاكُ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ الْجِنُّ سُكَّانَ الْأَرْضِ، وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ سُكَّانَ السَّمَاءِ، وَهُمْ عُمَّارُهَا، لِكُلِ سَمَاءٍ مَلَائِكَةٌ، وَلِكُلِ أَهْلِ سَمَاءٍ صَلَاةٌ وَتَسْبِيحٌ وَدُعَاءٌ، فَكُلُّ أَهْلِ سَمَاءٍ أَشَدُّ عِبَادَةً وَأَكْثَرُ دُعَاءً وَصَلَاةً وَتَسْبِيحًا مِنَ الَّذِينَ تَحْتَهُمْ. وَقَدْ قَالَ بَعْضُ الْعُلَمَاءُ: عَمَّرُوا الْأَرْضَ أَلْفَيْ سَنَةٍ. وَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ: أَرْبَعِينَ سَنَةً. وعَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: إِنَّ الْكِلَابَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ، وَهِيَ مِنْ ضُعَفَاءِ الْجِنِّ. وَقَدْ رَوَى أَبُو هُرَيْرَةَ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: "إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَنَ شَيْطَانَ الْجِنِّ فَمَسَخَهُمْ دَوَابَّ فِي الْأَرْضِ فَهِيَ هَذِهِ الْكِلَابُ السُّودُ، وَهِيَ الْجِنُّ".
Translation
✧ THE FIRST TO INHABIT THE EARTH The first to inhabit the earth were the jinn. They continued to populate the earth and worship Allah (Mighty and Majestic) until a long time passed over them, and they began to attack one another. One of their kings, whose name was Yūsuf, forbade them; and it is said that he was a prophet, though such a thing is not established. Then Allah sent against them an army of angels, among them Iblīs, and they drove them away from the earth. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās that he said: The jinn were the inhabitants of the earth, and the angels were the inhabitants of the heaven, and they were its dwellers; for every heaven there were angels, and for every people of a heaven there was prayer, glorification, and supplication; and every people of a heaven were more intense in worship and more abundant in supplication, prayer, and glorification than those below them. Some scholars said: They populated the earth for two thousand years. Others said: forty years. From Ibn ʿAbbās, he said: Dogs are from the jinn, and they are among the weak jinn. Abū Hurayrah narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that he said: "Allah cursed the satans of the jinn and transformed them into beasts on the earth; so they are these black dogs, and they are the jinn."
