Translation
✧ The appointment of ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād over Khurāsān In the year fifty-four, Muʿāwiyah appointed ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād over Khurāsān. That was because when Ziyād died, ʿUbayd Allāh came as a delegate to Muʿāwiyah. Muʿāwiyah said to him: “Whom did my brother appoint as his successor over his governorship of al-Kūfah?” He said: “ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Usayd.” He said: “And over al-Baṣrah, Samurah b. Jundub.” Then he said: “Had your father appointed you, I would have appointed you.” Whenever Muʿāwiyah wanted to appoint a man from Banū Ḥarb, he would appoint him over al-Ṭāʾif. If he saw in him what pleased him, he would appoint him over Makkah in addition to it. If he governed well, he would add al-Madīnah to it for him. Thus, when he appointed a man over al-Ṭāʾif, it was said: “He is in abī jād”; when he appointed him over Makkah, it was said: “He is in al-qarār”; and when he appointed him over al-Madīnah, it was said: “He has become skilled.” Muʿāwiyah appointed ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād over Khurāsān when he was twenty-five years old. He arrived there, crossed the river to the mountains of Bukhārā, and conquered Rāmīthan and half of Baykand—both of which are in Bukhārā. He met the Turks at Bukhārā, accompanied by their king and his wife. When God defeated them, the Muslims overtook her before she could put on both of her khuffs, so she put on one of them and the other remained. The Muslims seized it and valued the sock at two hundred thousand dirhams. He remained in Khurāsān for two years.
