The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
وَفِي سنة أربع وخمسين عَزَلَ مُعَاوِيَةُ سَمُرَةَ بْنَ جُنْدُبٍ عَنِ الْبَصْرَةِ وَوَلَّى عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عَمْرِو بْنِ غَيْلَانَ وَكَانَ سَمُرَةُ خَلِيفَةَ زِيَادٍ عَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ، فَلَمَّا مَاتَ زِيَادٌ أَقَرَّهُ مُعَاوِيَةُ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ ثُمَّ عَزَلَهُ، فَقَالَ سَمُرَةُ بْنُ جُنْدُبٍ: وَاللَّهِ لَوْ أَطَعْتُ اللَّهَ كَمَا أَطَعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ مَا عَذَّبَنِي أَبَدًا. وَهَذَا لَا يَصِحُّ عَنْهُ. وَأَقَرَّ مُعَاوِيَةُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ خَالِدِ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ عَلَى نِيَابَةِ الْكُوفَةِ، وَكَانَ زِيَادٌ قَدِ اسْتَخْلَفَهُ عَلَيْهَا.
Translation
✧ In the year fifty-four, Muʿāwiyah dismissed Samurah b. Jundub from al-Baṣrah and appointed ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Ghaylān. Samurah had been Ziyād's deputy over al-Baṣrah; when Ziyād died, Muʿāwiyah confirmed him for six months, then dismissed him. Samurah b. Jundub said: 'By God, had I obeyed God as I obeyed Muʿāwiyah, He would never have punished me.' This is not authentically transmitted from him. Muʿāwiyah confirmed ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Asīd as deputy over al-Kūfah; Ziyād had appointed him as his successor over it.
