The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān

Translation

✧ Muʿāwiyah's desire to move the pulpit from Madinah In the year fifty, Muʿāwiyah ordered that the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ be carried to Syria. He said: It will not be left—it and the staff of the Prophet ﷺ—in Madinah while they are the killers of ʿUthmān. He sought the staff, and it was with Saʿd al-Qaraẓ. He wanted to take the staff that the Prophet ﷺ used to hold in his hand when he delivered the sermon, standing on the pulpit while holding it. Abū Hurayrah and Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, we remind you of Allah not to do this, for it is not right that you remove the pulpit from the place where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed it, or that you remove his staff from Madinah. So it was moved, and the sun was eclipsed until the stars appeared visibly. The people regarded that as grave. He said: I did not intend to carry it away; I only feared that it might have become worm-eaten, so I looked at it. Then he clothed it. Al-Wāqidī narrated it. And it was narrated: that ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān resolved concerning the pulpit, and Qabīṣah said to him: [I remind you of] Allah not to do it, for Muʿāwiyah moved it and the sun was eclipsed, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever swears falsely on my pulpit, let him take his seat in the Fire," and you would remove it from Madinah while it is the place where rights are decided among them [in Madinah]. So he desisted. When al-Walīd [performed the pilgrimage], he resolved on that. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib sent word to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, saying: Speak to your companion; let him fear Allah and not expose himself to His wrath. So he spoke to him and he desisted. When Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik performed the pilgrimage, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz informed him of what had happened with ʿAbd al-Malik and al-Walīd. He said: I would not like this to be mentioned about ʿAbd al-Malik or al-Walīd. What have we to do with this? We have taken the world and it is in our hands, and we intend to go to a sign among the signs of Islam and carry it away? This is not right.
