Translation
✧ The Ghazwah of al-Ghawr In this year al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr marched to the mountains of al-Ghawr and raided those in them. They had apostatized, so he seized them by the sword, taking the land by force, and gained from it much booty and captives. When al-Ḥakam returned from this ghazwah, he died at Marw, according to some. Al-Ḥakam had crossed the river during his governorship but had not conquered it. The first of the Muslims to drink from the river was a mawlā of al-Ḥakam; he scooped with his shield, drank, then handed it to al-Ḥakam, who drank, performed ablution, and prayed two rakʿahs. Thus he was the first of the Muslims to do that, then he returned. A stratagem of al-Muhallab Al-Muhallab was with al-Ḥakam b. ʿAmr in Khurāsān, and he raided with him some of the mountains of the Turks, and they gained booty. The Turks seized the mountain passes and roads against them, and al-Ḥakam was at a loss. So he appointed al-Muhallab over the war, and al-Muhallab kept devising until he captured one of the great men of the Turks. He said to him: "Either you lead us out of this narrow pass or I will kill you." The man said: "Light a fire facing one of these roads, and send the baggage toward it. They will gather there and leave the other roads. Then hasten to another road, for they will not catch up with you until you have exited it." So he did that, and the people were saved with the booty they had.
