Translation

✧ Among those who died in this year was Qays b. ʿĀṣim b. Sinān b. Khālid b. Munqir b. ʿUbayd b. Muqāʿis b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd, Abū ʿAlī al-Munqirī, also called Abū Qabīṣa: He was among the leaders of the people in the Jāhiliyyah and Islam, and he was among those who forbade wine in the Jāhiliyyah. That was because one day he became drunk and behaved improperly with a female relative of his, so she fled from him. When morning came, he was told about that, and he forbade it, reciting: I saw wine as a benefit, yet in it are disgraceful things that shame the noble man. So no, by God, I will never drink it as long as I live, nor will I ever use it to cure a sick person. His conversion to Islam was with the delegation of Banū Tamīm, and in some ḥadīths, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "This is the master of the people of the desert." He was generous, praised, and noble. He is the one about whom the poet said on the day he died: Qays was not one whose loss is the loss of a single man, but rather he was the edifice of a people that has collapsed. Al-Aṣmaʿī said: I heard Abū ʿAmr b. al-ʿAlāʾ and Abū Sufyān b. al-ʿAlāʾ say: It was said to al-Aḥnaf b. Qays: "From whom did you learn forbearance?" He said: "From Qays b. ʿĀṣim al-Minqarī. We used to go to him for judgment as people go to jurists for jurisprudence. One day, while we were with him, sitting in his courtyard with his cloak wrapped around his legs, a group came to him with a slain man and a bound man. They said: 'This is your son; your nephew killed him.' He said: 'By God, he did not untie his sitting posture until he finished his speech, then he turned to a son of his in the assembly and said: 'Release your cousin, bury your brother, and send to his mother a hundred camels, for she is a stranger.' Then he looked at the killer and said: 'You have decreased your number, severed your kinship, disobeyed your Lord, and obeyed your devil.' It is said that when death came to him, his sons sat around him, and they were thirty-two males. He said to them: 'O my sons, appoint the eldest of you as your leader, and you will succeed your father. Do not appoint the youngest, lest your peers despise you. Hold fast to wealth and its acquisition, for it is a source of honor for the noble and a means of independence from the base. Beware of asking people, for it is among the lowest earnings of a man. Do not wail over me, for the Messenger of God ﷺ was not wailed over. And do not bury me where Bakr b. Wāʾil might notice, for I used to be their enemy in the Jāhiliyyah.' About him the poet says: Upon you be God's peace, Qays b. ʿĀṣim, and His mercy as long as He wills to have mercy. A greeting from one to whom you gave a favor that, when its like is mentioned, fills the mouth. Qays was not one whose loss is the loss of a single man, but rather he was the edifice of a people that has collapsed.
