✧ In the year forty-six, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. al-Walīd returned from the lands of the Byzantines to Ḥimṣ. His standing had grown great in Syria, and its people inclined to him because of his service to the Muslims and the legacy of his father, until Muʿāwiyah feared him and was apprehensive for himself on account of the people's inclination toward him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. al-Walīd al-Qurashī al-Makhzūmī was one of the renowned brave men and famous heroes like his father. His standing had grown great in Syria such that Muʿāwiyah feared him. He died poisoned, may God have mercy on him and honor his resting place. Ibn Mandah and Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī said: He met the Prophet ﷺ. Ibn ʿAsākir narrated by way of Abū ʿUmar that ʿAmr b. Qays narrated from him, from the Prophet ﷺ, regarding cupping between the shoulder blades. Al-Bukhārī said: It is munqaṭiʿ, meaning mursal. Al-Zubayr b. Bakkār said: He was of great standing among the people of Syria. He witnessed Ṣiffīn with Muʿāwiyah, and Kaʿb b. Juʿayl was a panegyrist for him and his two brothers Muhājir and ʿAbd Allāh. Ibn Sumayʿ said: He used to lead the summer expeditions in the time of Muʿāwiyah, and he transmitted from Muʿāwiyah. Ibn Jarīr and others mentioned that a man called Ibn Uthāl—who was the head of the protected people in the land of Ḥimṣ—gave him a drink containing poison, and he died. Some claimed that this was at Muʿāwiyah's command to him in that matter, but this is not sound, and God knows best. Someone lamented him, saying: Your father led the armies westward to the Byzantines when Persia yielded the tribute, And how many a youth did you rouse after slumber With the clatter of the bridle while he was drowsy, sluggard? The two ranks are not equal: a rank for Khālid, And a rank over which from Damascus are the cowled ones. They mentioned that Khālid b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Khālid b. al-Walīd came to Madinah, and ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr said to him: "What happened to Ibn Uthāl?" Khālid b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān fell silent. Then he returned to Ḥimṣ, rose against Ibn Uthāl and killed him. Muʿāwiyah imprisoned him, then released him. Then he came to Madinah, and ʿUrwah said to him: "What happened to Ibn Uthāl?" He replied: "I have taken care of him for you. But what happened to Ibn Jurmūz?" ʿUrwah fell silent.
