The caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān
خُرُوجِ سَهْمٍ وَالْخَطِيمِ وفي سنة ست وأربعين خَرَجَ الْخَطِيمُ، وَهُوَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ، وَسَهْمُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ الْهُجَيْمِيُّ، فَحُكِّمَا، فَأَمَّا سَهْمٌ فَإِنَّهُ خَرَجَ إِلَى الْأَهْوَازِ فَحُكِّمَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ فَاخْتَفَى وَطَلَبَ الْأَمَانَ فَلَمْ يُؤَمِّنْهُ زِيَادٌ وَطَلَبَهُ حَتَّى أَخَذَهُ وَقَتَلَهُ وَصَلَبَهُ عَلَى بَابِهِ. وَأَمَّا الْخَطِيمُ فَإِنَّ زِيَادًا سَيَّرَهُ إِلَى الْبَحْرَيْنِ ثُمَّ أَقْدَمَهُ وَقَالَ لِمُسْلِمِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْبَاهِلِيِّ، وَالِدِ قُتَيْبَةَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ: اضْمَنْهُ، فَأَبَى وَقَالَ: إِنْ بَاتَ خَارِجًا عَنْ بَيْتِهِ أَعْلَمْتُكَ، ثُمَّ أَتَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فَقَالَ لَهُ: لَمْ يَبِتِ الْخَطِيمُ اللَّيْلَةَ فِي بَيْتِهِ، فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُتِلَ وَأُلْقِيَ فِي بَاهِلَةَ.
Translation
✧ The emergence of Sahm and al-Khaṭīm In the year forty-six al-Khaṭīm, who is Yazīd b. Mālik al-Bāhilī, and Sahm b. Ghālib al-Hujaymī emerged, and they were arbitrated. As for Sahm, he went out to al-Ahwāz and was arbitrated there, then he returned and went into hiding and sought security, but Ziyād did not grant him security and sought him until he seized him, killed him, and crucified him at his gate. As for al-Khaṭīm, Ziyād sent him to al-Baḥrayn, then brought him forward and said to Muslim b. ʿAmr al-Bāhilī, the father of Qutaybah b. Muslim: Guarantee him. He refused and said: If he spends the night outside his house, I will inform you. Then Muslim came to him and said to him: Al-Khaṭīm did not spend the night in his house. So he ordered him to be killed, and he was thrown among Bāhilah.
