Translation
✧ In the year forty-two the Khawārij moved — those whom ʿAlī had pardoned on the day of al-Nahrawān, and whose wounded had recovered and whose strength had returned to them. The reason for their rising was that Ḥayyān b. Ẓabyān al-Sulamī was a Khārijī, and he had been gravely wounded on the day of the Nahrawān. When he recovered he joined al-Rayy with men who were with him: They stayed there until news of ʿAlī's killing reached them. When news of ʿAlī's killing reached them, they prayed for mercy upon his killer Ibn Muljam. One of them, Sālim b. Rabīʿah al-ʿAbsī, said: 'May God not sever a hand that raised the sword against ʿAlī's nape.' They began to praise God for the killing of ʿAlī, ؓ, and He was not pleased with them. Then Sālim later turned away from the opinion of the Khawārij and become upright. Ḥayyān called them to rise and fight the people of the qiblah, and they came to al-Kūfah and stayed there until Muʿāwiyah arrived. He appointed al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah over al-Kūfah, and he loved security and conducted himself well. He would be approached and told: 'So-and-so holds the opinion of the Shīʿah and so-and-so holds the opinion of the Khawārij,' and he would say: 'God has decreed that they will continue to differ, and God will judge between His servants.' So the people felt safe from him. The Khawārij would meet one another and recall the place of their brethren at the Nahrawān. They gathered around three men: al-Mustawrid b. ʿUllifah al-Taymī of Taym al-Ribāb, Muʿādh b. Juwayn al-Ṭāʾī, the cousin of Zayd b. Ḥuṣayn who was killed on the day of the Nahrawān, and Ḥayyān b. Ẓabyān al-Sulamī. They assembled, numbering four hundred, and consulted about whom to appoint over them. Each of them declined the command for himself, then they agreed and appointed al-Mustawrid and pledged allegiance to him. That was in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and they set a date to rise and prepared themselves. Their rising was at the beginning of Shaʿbān in the year forty-three.
