✧ The reconciliation of Muʿāwiyah and Qays b. Saʿd (In the year forty-one the reconciliation took place between Muʿāwiyah and Qays b. Saʿd. Qays had refused that, and the reason for his refusal was) that when ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbbās learned what al-Ḥasan intended, namely handing over the affair to Muʿāwiyah, he wrote to Muʿāwiyah asking him for a guarantee of safety for himself regarding the wealth and other things he had obtained. He answered him to that effect and sent ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir with a dense army. ʿUbayd Allāh went out to them at night and left his troops, over whom he was commander, without a commander, and Qays b. Saʿd was among them. The troops appointed Qays b. Saʿd over themselves, and he and they pledged together to fight Muʿāwiyah until he stipulated safety for the Shīʿah of ʿAlī and for those who were with him regarding their blood and their wealth. It is said that Qays was the commander of that army (in the vanguard, as we have mentioned, and he intensely disliked the rule of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān. When it reached him that al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī had made peace with Muʿāwiyah, a large group gathered with him and pledged allegiance to him to fight Muʿāwiyah until he stipulated for the Shīʿah of ʿAlī regarding their blood, their wealth, and what they had seized during the fitnah. Muʿāwiyah corresponded with him, calling him to obedience, and sent him a blank scroll, sealing its bottom, and said to him: "Write in this whatever you wish, and it is yours." ʿAmr said to Muʿāwiyah: "Do not give him this; fight him." Muʿāwiyah said: "Easy now. We will not be able to kill them until they kill equal numbers of the people of Syria. What good is life after that? By God, I will never fight him as long as I can find any alternative to fighting him." When Muʿāwiyah sent him that scroll, Qays stipulated for himself and for the Shīʿah of ʿAlī safety regarding the blood and wealth they had seized, and he did not ask in that scroll for any money. Muʿāwiyah gave him what he asked, and Qays b. Saʿd and those with him entered into obedience to Muʿāwiyah. They used to count the cunning men of the people, when the fitnah broke out, as five, of whom it was said they were the men of judgment and stratagem of the Arabs: Muʿāwiyah, ʿAmr, al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, Qays b. Saʿd, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Budayl al-Khuzāʿī. Qays and Ibn Budayl were with ʿAlī, and al-Mughīrah was staying apart in al-Ṭāʾif. When the affair became settled for Muʿāwiyah, Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ entered upon him and said: "Peace be upon you, O king!" Muʿāwiyah laughed and said: "What harm would it have done you, O Abū Isḥāq, if you had said: O Commander of the Faithful?" He said: "Do you say it joyfully, laughing? By God, I would not love that I had assumed it by what you assumed it by."
