Translation

✧ The going out of Sahm b. Ghālib In the year forty-one Sahm b. Ghālib al-Hujaymī went out against Ibn ʿĀmir with seventy men, among them al-Khaṭīm al-Bāhilī, who is Yazīd b. Mālik. He was only called al-Khaṭīm because of a blow struck on his face. They encamped between the two bridges and al-Baṣrah. ʿUbādah b. Furṣ al-Laythī passed by them returning from a raid, and with him were his son and his brother's son. The Khawārij said to them: "Who are you?" They said: "A Muslim people." They said: "You have lied." ʿUbādah said: "Glory be to God! Accept from us what the Messenger of God ﷺ accepted from me, for I called him a liar and fought him, then I came to him and became a Muslim, and he accepted that from me." They said: "You are an infidel," and they killed him and killed his son and his brother's son. Ibn ʿĀmir went out to them in person and fought them, killing a number of them, and the rest of them withdrew to a thicket, among them Sahm and al-Khaṭīm. Ibn ʿĀmir offered them security, and they accepted it, so he granted them amnesty, and they returned. Muʿāwiyah wrote to him ordering their execution, so Ibn ʿĀmir wrote back to him: "I have made your protection binding upon them." When Ziyād came to al-Baṣrah in the year forty-five, Sahm and al-Khaṭīm fled and went out to al-Ahwāz. A group gathered around Sahm, and he advanced with them toward al-Baṣrah. He seized some people, but they said: "We are Jews," so he let them go, and he killed Saʿd, the client of Qudāmah b. Maẓʿūn. When he reached al-Baṣrah, his companions dispersed from him, and Sahm went into hiding. It is said that they dispersed at the time of his concealment. He sought amnesty, thinking that what had been permitted for him with Ibn ʿĀmir would be permitted for him with Ziyād, but Ziyād did not grant him amnesty. He searched for him, was guided to him, seized him, killed him, and crucified him in his house. It is said: He remained in hiding until Ziyād died, then ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād seized him and crucified him in the year fifty-four; and it is said before that. A man of the Khawārij said: If the parties have returned with his crucifixion, then may God not make far off Sahm b. Ghālib. As for al-Khaṭīm, he asked him about the killing of ʿUbādah, and he denied it, so he sent him to al-Baḥrayn, then brought him back after that.
