Translation
✧ [The elegy of Abu al-Aswad for our master ʿAlī ؓ] Abu al-Aswad al-Duʾalī elegized ʿAlī ؓ: Alā yā ʿaynu wayḥaki asʿidīnā alā tabkī amīra al-muʾminīnā Will you weep, Umm Kulthūm, over him with her tears, having seen certainty Alā qul li-l-Khawārij ḥaythu kānū falā qarrat ʿuyūnu al-ḥāsidīnā In the month of fasting you bereaved us of the best of all people altogether?! You killed the best of those who rode mounts and tamed them, and those who rode ships and those who wore sandals and those who made them and those who recited the Mathānī and the Mubīn All the merits of good things are in him and the love of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds Quraysh knew, wherever they were, that you were the best of them in lineage and religion When you faced the face of Abū Ḥusayn you saw the full moon above the onlookers Before his killing we were in good state we saw the mawlā of the Messenger of Allah among us He upheld truth, not doubting it, and was just toward enemies and kin He did not conceal knowledge he had and was not created among the arrogant It is as if the people, when they lost ʿAlī, were ostriches wandering in a barren land for years So let Muʿāwiyah b. Ṣakhr not gloat, for the remnant of the caliphs is among us [The elegy of ʿĀʾishah for ʿAlī ؓ] He said: When the killing of ʿAlī reached ʿĀʾishah, she said: She cast down her staff and settled with it, as the traveler's eye is cooled by returning Bakr b. Ḥammād al-Tāhartī said: Say to Ibn Muljam, while destinies prevail, you demolished the pillars of the religion and Islam You killed the best of those who walk on a foot and the greatest of people in submission and faith and the most knowledgeable of people in the Qurʾān, then in what the Messenger legislated for us as law and clarification The Prophet's in-law, his mawlā, and his supporter; his virtues became light and proof He had, despite the envier's dislike, the station of Hārūn from Mūsā b. ʿImrān I remembered his killer while tears flowed down, and I said: Glory be to the Lord of the Throne, glory be! I think he was not of the kind of Anas; no, but he was a devil He used to tell them [this] of his killing before death, time after time May Allah not forgive him his evil deed and may He not water the grave of ʿImrān b. Ḥiṭṭān O blow from a wretch who intended by it nothing but to attain the pleasure of the Lord of the Throne Rather, a blow from a misguided one that brought him to hellfire, and he will meet the Merciful angry because of it As if he intended by his blow nothing but to burn in the torment of eternity in fires )
