قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ، وَأَنَا أَخَافُ أَنْ يَرُدَّنِي كَمَا رَدَّ أَبَا جَنْدَلٍ وَأَبَا بَصِيرٍ، وَحَالُ الرِّجَالِ لَيْسَ كَحَالِ النِّسَاءِ، ✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Ibrāhīm al-Qibṭī Ibrāhīm al-Qibṭī, mawlā of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, known as Abū Rāfiʿ: He witnessed the conquest of Egypt and settled there. Among its people, ʿAlī b. Rabāḥ narrated from him. Abū Rāfiʿ later went over to ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, who appointed him over the treasury of Kufa. He died in Kufa in this year, ؓ. Al-Ashʿath b. Qays b. Maʿdīkarib b. Muʿāwiya b. Jabala b. ʿAdī b. Rabīʿa Al-Ashʿath b. Qays b. Maʿdīkarib b. Muʿāwiya b. Jabala b. ʿAdī b. Rabīʿa, Abū Muḥammad: He came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the delegation of Kinda, then returned to Yemen. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, he apostatized, was captured, and brought to Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ؓ in fetters. He then embraced Islam, was pardoned, and Abū Bakr gave him his sister in marriage. He narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, fought the Persians in Iraq alongside Saʿd, held the banner of Kinda at Ṣiffīn with ʿAlī ؓ, took part in the fight against the Kharijites at al-Nahrawān, entered al-Madāʾin, then returned to Kufa where he remained until he died at the time when al-Ḥasan made peace with Muʿāwiya. He died at the age of sixty-three. Bashīr b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir Bashīr b. ʿAbd al-Mundhir, or Lubāba: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him back from al-Rawḥāʾ when he set out to Badr, appointed him over Medina, and allotted him his share and reward, so he was like one who was present. He witnessed Uḥud and was left as his deputy over Medina when he went on the expedition of al-Sawīq. He carried the banner of Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf in the expedition of the conquest, and witnessed all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When they consulted him about Banū Qurayẓa, he indicated to them that it was slaughter; then he regretted it and tied himself to a pillar until Allah relented toward him. Tamīm b. Aws b. Khārija b. Suwayd al-Dārī Tamīm b. Aws b. Khārija b. Suwayd al-Dārī, known as Abū Ruqayya: He came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with a group of the Dāriyyūn when he returned from Tabūk, and they stayed until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died. From Khālid b. Saʿīd, who said: Tamīm al-Dārī said: I was in Syria when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was sent. I went out for some need of mine, and night overtook me. I said: Tonight I am under the protection of the mighty one of this valley. He said: When I lay down to sleep, a caller called out whom I could not see: Seek refuge in Allah, for the jinn cannot protect anyone against Allah. I said: What do you say? He said: The trustworthy Messenger of Allah has come forth, and we prayed behind him at al-Ḥajūn, and we have become Muslims and followed him. The plots of the jinn have weakened, and they have been pelted with shooting stars. Go to Muḥammad and become a Muslim. When morning came, I went to the monastery of Ayyūb and asked a monk there, and told him the news. He said: They have spoken truly to you. We find that he has come forth from the sanctuary, and he is the best of the prophets, so do not be preceded to him. He said: I took pains to travel until I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and became a Muslim. From Abū Qilāba, who said: Tamīm al-Dārī used to complete the Qur'an every seven nights. The scholars of biographies said: Tamīm asked ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ for permission to relate stories to the people, and he permitted him. When ʿUthmān ؓ was killed, he moved to Syria. Al-Ḥārith b. Khazma b. ʿAdī b. Abī b. Ghanm Al-Ḥārith b. Khazma b. ʿAdī b. Abī b. Ghanm, Abū Bashīr: He witnessed Badr and all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and died in this year at the age of sixty-seven. Khārija b. Ḥudhāfa b. Ghānim Khārija b. Ḥudhāfa b. Ghānim: He witnessed the conquest of Egypt and settled there. He was the commander of the reinforcements sent by ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He was in charge of the shurṭa of Egypt during ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ's governorship for Muʿāwiya. A Kharijite killed him in Egypt this year, thinking he was ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ. Khawwāt b. Jubayr Khawwāt b. Jubayr, Abū ʿAbd Allāh, or Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Anṣārī al-Madanī: He is the companion of Dhāt al-Niḥyayn in the pre-Islamic era, about whom the proverb was coined: "More preoccupied than Dhāt al-Niḥyayn." Khawwāt embraced Islam and set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Badr, but a stone struck him at al-Rawḥāʾ and broke something, so the Prophet ﷺ sent him back to Medina and allotted him his reward and his share, so he was like one who was present. Al-Bukhārī mentioned in his History, from Ibn ʿUyayna, that he witnessed Badr. He witnessed Uḥud and the battles after it with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. As for the story of Dhāt al-Niḥyayn: From ʿUthmān b. Wāqid, who said: Khawwāt b. Jubayr said: I was the companion of Dhāt al-Niḥyayn in the pre-Islamic era—the niḥy is a small skin—and I went to the market of ʿUkāẓ. There I saw a girl with two skins of butter, like a piece of the moon. I said to her: Who are you? She said: I am Salmā bt. Yaʿār al-Khathʿamiyya. I said: Perhaps this butter of yours is adulterated? She said: Glory be to Allah! Would a free woman adulterate? I said to her: Come down to the bottom of the valley so I can taste your butter. She came down, and I took one of the skins and tasted it. Then I said to her: This is not adulterated. Then I handed it to her in her hand while it was open. Then I took the other and tasted it, then handed it to her in her left hand. Then I seized her and had my way with her, but I disliked to make her let go of it, for it was the sustenance of her family. So it became a proverb: "More preoccupied than Dhāt al-Niḥyayn." Then I became a Muslim and emigrated to the Prophet ﷺ. While I was on some road in Medina, I came upon a prostitute of the prostitutes of the pre-Islamic era who had been a friend of mine, but my Islam kept me from her, and my soul called me to her. I kept turning toward her until the wall of Banū Jadhra met me, and blood flowed and my face was crushed. I came to the Prophet ﷺ in that state. He said: "Mihyam?" So I told him. He said: "Do not do it again. When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, desires good for a servant, He hastens his punishment in this world." Then, after some nights, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by me while I was sitting with some women of the women of Medina, who were conversing with me, joking and jesting. He said: I knew that he had seen me. He said: He went on and said nothing. The next day I went to him, and when he saw me, he said: "O Khawwāt, has not the time come for that camel to return from its straying?" I said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, it has not strayed since I became a Muslim. He said: "You speak truly, but do not return to that gathering, for it is the gathering of Satan." [Ibn al-Jawzī, may Allah have mercy on him, said:] Abū ʿUbayda al-Harawī interpreted this hadith and said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ alluded to his story with Dhāt al-Niḥyayn. He said: By his saying "its straying," he meant that when he did that, he strayed in the land out of fear. But this is nothing, for he would not have reproached him for something that happened in the pre-Islamic era. He only blamed him for sitting with women after Islam. And he narrated that to us in a hadith clearer than this. From Zayd b. Aslam, who narrated that Khawwāt b. Jubayr said: I camped with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Marr al-Ẓahrān. I came out of my tent, and there were women talking, and they pleased me, so I went back and took out a fine garment of mine from my bag and put it on, then sat with them. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out of his tent and said to me: "O ʿAbd Allāh, what makes you sit with them?" He said: I was in awe of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, a camel of mine is straying, and I am looking for a hobble for it. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on, and I followed him. He threw his cloak to me and entered the arāk trees, relieved himself, performed ablution, and then came and said: "Abā ʿAbd Allāh, what happened to the straying of your camel?" He said: I hastened to Medina and avoided the mosque and the company of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When that became long for me, I watched for a time when the mosque was empty and began to pray. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out from one of his rooms, came and prayed two light rakʿas, then sat. I prolonged my prayer hoping he would leave me. He said: "Prolong as much as you wish, O Abā ʿAbd Allāh, for I will not leave until you finish." I said: By Allah, I will apologize to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and relieve his heart. He said: I finished and said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Abā ʿAbd Allāh, what happened to the straying of the camel?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you with the truth, that camel has not strayed since I became a Muslim. He said: "May Allah have mercy on you," twice or three times, then he stopped and did not repeat it. Khawwāt b. Jubayr died in Medina in this year at the age of seventy-four. He was of medium height among men. Labīd b. Rabīʿa b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb Labīd b. Rabīʿa b. Mālik b. Jaʿfar b. Kilāb, Abū ʿAqīl the poet: His father was called Rabīʿa of the destitute because of his generosity and liberality. He came in a delegation, they became Muslims, and returned to their lands after the death of his brother Arbad and ʿĀmir b. al-Ṭufayl. Then he emigrated and his Islam was good. He settled in Kufa in the days of ʿUmar. He was one of the excellent poets in the pre-Islamic era and in Islam. Al-Mughīra said to him: Recite to me what you composed of poetry in the pre-Islamic era and in Islam. He said: Allah has replaced that for me with Sūrat al-Baqara and Āl ʿImrān. Abū ʿUbayda said: Labīd composed only one line in Islam, which is this: Praise be to Allah that my term did not come to me until I wore from Islam a garment. ʿAmr b. Shayba said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. Ḥakīm narrated to me, saying: Labīd was one of the generous of the Arabs. He had sworn that whenever the east wind blew, he would feed people. He had two large bowls that were brought morning and evening every day to the people of the mosque of his people. One day the east wind blew while al-Walīd b. ʿUqba was over Kufa. Al-Walīd ascended the pulpit, addressed the people, and then said: Your brother Labīd b. Rabīʿa vowed in the pre-Islamic era that whenever the east wind blew, he would feed people. This is one of his days, and the east wind has blown, so help him, and I am the first to do so. Then he descended from the pulpit and sent him a hundred young she-camels, and wrote to him some verses he composed: I do not think the butcher sharpens his two blades when the winds of Abū ʿAqīl blow, A proud-nosed, haughty ʿĀmirī, long of arm, like a polished sword. He said to his daughter: Answer him, for by my life, I have lived for a time and have never stooped to answer a poet. She said: When the winds of Abū ʿAqīl blow, we call al-Walīd at their blowing, A proud-nosed, awe-inspiring ʿAbshamī, who helped Labīd in his manliness With the like of hills, as if a caravan of Banū Ḥām were seated upon them. Abā Wahb, may Allah reward you well; we slaughtered them and fed tharīd. Return, for the generous one has a return, and my expectation of Ibn Arwā is that you will return. Labīd said: You have done well, except that you asked him for food. She said: Kings are not ashamed of their requests. He said: And you, my little daughter, are more poetical in this. When Labīd reached seventy-seven years, he said: The soul spent the night complaining to me, sobbing, and it has carried you seven after seventy. If you see three more, you will attain a hope, and in the lands there is fulfillment of the eighties. When he reached ninety, he said: It is as if I have passed ninety after casting off my cloak from my shoulders. When he reached one hundred and ten, he said: Is there not in a hundred that a man has lived, and in the completion of ten after it, a lifetime? When he passed that, he said: I have become weary of life and its length, and of this people's asking: How is Labīd? Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqba b. Abī Muʿayṭ Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿUqba b. Abī Muʿayṭ: She became a Muslim in Makkah and gave allegiance before the Hijrah. She was the first woman to emigrate after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated to Medina. She emigrated during the truce of al-Ḥudaybiya. From Rabīʿa b. ʿUthmān and Qudāma, who said: We do not know of any Qurayshī woman who left her parents as a Muslim emigrant except Umm Kulthūm. She said: I used to go out to a desert area of ours where my family was, and stay there three or four days—it was near al-Tanʿīm—then return to my family, and they did not deny my going to the desert. Until I resolved to travel. One day I left Makkah as if intending the desert. When those who followed me had turned back, there was a man from Khuzāʿa. He said: Where do you want to go? I said: What is your business, and who are you? He said: A man from Khuzāʿa. I felt at ease with him because Khuzāʿa was in the pact and covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. So I said: I am a woman of Quraysh, and I want to join the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but I do not know the way. He said: I am your companion until I bring you to Medina. Then he brought me a camel, and I mounted it. He led the camel, and by Allah, he did not speak a single word to me. When he made the camel kneel, he withdrew from me. When I dismounted, he came to the camel, hobbled it to a tree, and withdrew to the shade of a tree. When it was time to depart, he saddled the camel, brought it near, and turned away from me. When I mounted, he took its head and did not look back until I dismounted. He continued thus until we reached Medina. May Allah reward him as the best of companions. I entered upon Umm Salama veiled, and she did not recognize me until I uncovered the veil. She embraced me and said: Have you emigrated to Allah and His Messenger? I said: Yes, and I fear that he will send me back as he sent back Abū Jandal and Abū Baṣīr. The case of men is not like the case of women. The people will come in the morning, and my absence from them has lasted five days since I left them. They wait for the time I used to be absent, then they seek me; if they do not find me, they depart. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered upon Umm Salama, and she told him the news of Umm Kulthūm. He welcomed her and made it easy. I said: I have fled to you with my religion, so protect me and do not send me back to them, lest they tempt me and torture me, for I have no endurance for torture. I am only a woman, and the weakness of women you know. I have seen you send back two men until one of them resisted. He said: "Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has broken the pact regarding women," and He ruled in that with a ruling with which they were all pleased. He used to send back women, so her two brothers al-Walīd and ʿUmāra came the next day and said: Fulfill our condition and what you pledged to us. He said: "Allah has broken that." So they departed. Ibn al-Jawzī said: The meaning of the breaking of the pact regarding women is the revelation of the examination regarding them. That is, he used to say to the woman: By Allah, nothing brought you out except love of Allah and His Messenger and Islam, and you did not come out for a husband or wealth. When she said that, she was left and not sent back. Umm Kulthūm was a virgin. Zayd b. Ḥāritha married her. When he was killed, al-Zubayr married her, and she bore him children. Then ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf married her, and she bore him children. Then ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ married her, and she died with him. Sharḥabīl b. al-Simṭ al-Kindī and Jahjāh al-Ghifārī In this year died Sharḥabīl b. al-Simṭ al-Kindī, one of the companions of Muʿāwiya. It is said he was a Companion. And at the beginning of ʿAlī's caliphate, Jahjāh al-Ghifārī died; he had companionship (ṣuḥbah). Quraẓah b. Kaʿb al-Anṣārī and Ḥassān b. Thābit And during ʿAlī's caliphate, Quraẓah b. Kaʿb al-Anṣārī died in Kūfah, (and it was said: nay, he died during al-Mughīrah's governorship of Kūfah for Muʿāwiyah). He witnessed Uḥud and other [battles], and he witnessed all the engagements with ʿAlī. And in this [year], Ḥassān b. Thābit died.
