The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
[فِرَارُ الشَّيَاطِينِ مِنْ سَيِّدِنَا عُمَرَ ؓ ] وَأَخْرَجَ ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: مَا فِي السَّمَاءِ مَلَكٌ.. إِلَّا وَهُوَ يُوَقِّرُ عُمَرَ، وَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ شَيْطَانٌ.. إِلَّا وَهُوَ يَفْرَقُ عُمَرَ». وَأَخْرَجَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي «الْأَوْسَطِ» عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِنَّ اللَّهَ بَاهَى بِأَهْلِ عَرَفَةَ عَامَّةً، وَبَاهَى بِعُمَرَ خَاصَّةً ». وَأَخْرَجَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَالدَّيْلَمِيُّ عَنِ الْفَضْلِ بْنِ الْعَبَّاسِ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « الْحَقُّ بَعْدِي مَعَ عُمَرَ حَيْثُ كَانَ ». وَأَخْرَجَ الشَّيْخَانِ عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ وَأَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ؓ قَالَا: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « بَيْنَا أَنَا نَائِمٌ.. رَأَيْتُنِي عَلَى قَلِيبٍ عَلَيْهَا دَلْوٌ، فَنَزَعْتُ مِنْهَا مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ، ثُمَّ أَخَذَهَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، فَنَزَعَ ذَنُوبًا أَوْ ذَنُوبَيْنٍ، وَفِي نَزْعِهِ ضَعْفٌ وَاللَّهُ يَغْفِرُ لَهُ، ثُمَّ جَاءَ عُمَرُ فَاسْتَقَى فَاسْتَحَالَتْ فِي يَدِهِ غَرْبًا، فَلَمْ أَرَ عَبْقَرِيًّا مِنَ النَّاسِ يَفْرِي فَرِيَّهُ حَتَّى رَوِيَ النَّاسُ وَضَرَبُوا بِعَطَنٍ ». قَالَ النَّوَوِيُّ فِي «تَهْذِيبِهِ»: (قَالَ الْعُلَمَاءُ: هَذَا إِشَارَةٌ إِلَى خِلَافَةِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ، وَكَثْرَةِ الْفُتُوحِ، وَظُهُورِ الْإِسْلَامِ فِي زَمَنِ عُمَرَ). وَأَخْرَجَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ عَنْ سَدِيسَةَ قَالَتْ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ لَمْ يَلْقَ عُمَرَ مُنْذُ أَسْلَمَ.. إِلَّا خَرَّ لِوَجْهِهِ ». وَأَخْرَجَ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: « قَالَ لِي جِبْرِيلُ: لِيَبْكِ الْإِسْلَامُ عَلَى مَوْتِ عُمَرَ ».
Translation
✧ [The flight of the devils from our master ʿUmar ؓ] Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “There is no angel in the heaven but he reveres ʿUmar, and no devil on the earth but he is terrified of ʿUmar.” Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted in al-Awsaṭ from Abū Hurayrah ؓ that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed Allah boasted of the people of ʿArafah in general, and He boasted of ʿUmar in particular.” Al-Ṭabarānī and al-Daylamī transmitted from al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The truth after me is with ʿUmar wherever he is.” Al-Bukhārī and Muslim transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar and Abū Hurayrah ؓ that they said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “While I was sleeping, I saw myself at a well upon which was a bucket. I drew from it as much as Allah willed, then Abū Bakr took it and drew a bucket or two, and in his drawing there was weakness—may Allah forgive him. Then ʿUmar came and drew water, and it turned into a large bucket in his hand. I have not seen a chief among the people do his work so vigorously until the people were watered and they settled by the watering place.” Al-Nawawī said in his Tahdhīb: “The scholars said: This is an allusion to the caliphate of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, the abundance of conquests, and the ascendancy of Islam in the time of ʿUmar.” Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted from Sadīsah that she said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Indeed the devil has not met ʿUmar since he embraced Islam but he fell on his face.” Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted from Ubayy b. Kaʿb that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Gabriel said to me: Let Islam weep over the death of ʿUmar.”
