Translation
✧ In the ḥadīths reported on the virtue of ʿUmar Al-Shaykhān transmitted from Abū Hurayrah ؓ who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “While I was sleeping, I saw myself in Paradise; and there was a woman performing ablution beside a palace. I said, ‘To whom does this palace belong?’ They said, ‘To ʿUmar.’ Then I remembered your jealousy and turned away.” He wept and said, “Would I be jealous of you, O Messenger of God?!” Al-Shaykhān transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar: that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “While I was sleeping, I drank—meaning milk—until I could see the moisture flowing in my nails, then I gave it to ʿUmar.” They said, “How did you interpret it, O Messenger of God?” He said, “Knowledge.” Al-Shaykhān transmitted from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī ؓ who said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “While I was sleeping, I saw people presented to me, and upon them were shirts. Some reached the breast, and some reached less than that. And ʿUmar was presented to me, and upon him was a shirt that he was dragging.” They said, “How did you interpret it, O Messenger of God?” He said, “The religion.” Al-Shaykhān transmitted from Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb; by Him in whose hand is my soul, the devil never met you walking along a mountain pass except that he took a pass other than yours.” Al-Bukhārī transmitted from Abū Hurayrah who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Among the nations before you there were people who were spoken to (muḥaddathūn). If there is anyone in my community, then it is ʿUmar,” meaning inspired. Al-Tirmidhī transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “God has placed the truth upon the tongue of ʿUmar and his heart.” Ibn ʿUmar said: No matter ever befell the people, and they said and he said, except that the Qurʾān descended in accordance with what ʿUmar said. Al-Tirmidhī and al-Ḥākim—who declared it sound—transmitted from ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “If there were a prophet after me, it would be ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb.” [The truth was placed upon the tongue of ʿUmar ؓ] Ibn Mājah and al-Ḥākim transmitted from Ubayy b. Kaʿb who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “The first one whom the truth will shake hands with is ʿUmar, and the first to whom it will greet with salām, and the first whose hand it will take and enter Paradise.” Ibn Manīʿ in his Musnad transmitted from ʿAlī ؓ who said: (We, the companions of Muḥammad, did not doubt that tranquility was spoken upon the tongue of ʿUmar). Al-Bazzār transmitted from Ibn ʿUmar who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “ʿUmar is the lamp of the people of Paradise.” Al-Bazzār transmitted from Qudāmah b. Maẓʿūn, from his uncle ʿUthmān b. Maẓʿūn, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “This is the lock of tribulation”—and he pointed with his hand to ʿUmar—“there shall remain between you and tribulations a gate with a strong lock as long as this one lives among you.” Al-Ṭabarānī in al-Awsaṭ transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ who said: Jibrīl came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: “Convey salām to ʿUmar, and inform him that his anger is might, and his approval is judgment.”
