The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
هِجْرَة عمر ؓ أَخْرَجَ ابْنُ عَسَاكِرَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ قَالَ: (مَا عَلِمْتُ أَحَدًا هَاجَرَ إِلَّا مُخْتَفِيًا إِلَّا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَمَّا هَمَّ بِالْهِجْرَةِ.. تَقَلَّدَ سَيْفَهُ، وَتَنَكَّبَ قَوْسَهُ وَانْتَضَى فِي يَدِهِ أَسْهُمًا، وَأَتَى الْكَعْبَةَ وَأَشْرَافُ قُرَيْشٍ بِفَنَائِهَا، فَطَافَ سَبْعًا، ثُمَّ صَلَّى رَكْعَتَيْنِ عِنْدَ الْمَقَامِ، ثُمَّ أَتَى حِلَقَهُمْ وَاحِدَةً وَاحِدَةً، فَقَالَ: شَاهَتِ الْوُجُوهُ، مَنْ أَرَادَ أَنْ تَثْكَلَهُ أُمُّهُ وَيُيَتَّمَ وَلَدُهُ، وَتُرَمَّلَ زَوْجَتُهُ.. فَلْيَلْقَنِي وَرَاءَ هَذَا الْوَادِي، فَمَا تَبِعَهُ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدٌ). وَأَخْرَجَ عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ ؓ (قَالَ: أَوَّلُ مَنْ قَدِمَ عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ: مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عُمَيْرٍ، ثُمَّ ابْنُ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ، ثُمَّ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ فِي عِشْرِينَ رَاكِبًا، فَقُلْنَا: مَا فَعَلَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: هُوَ عَلَى أَثَرِي، ثُمَّ قَدِمَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَأَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ مَعَهُ).
Translation
✧ The Hijrah of ʿUmar ؓ Ibn ʿAsākir related on the authority of ʿAlī, who said: (I knew no one who emigrated except in concealment, except ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb; for when he resolved to emigrate, he girded on his sword, slung his bow over his shoulder, took arrows in his hand, came to the Kaʿbah while the nobles of Quraysh were in its courtyard, circumambulated seven times, then prayed two rakʿahs at the Maqām, then came to their circles one by one and said: May the faces be ugly! Whoever wishes his mother to be bereaved of him, his children to be orphaned, and his wife to be widowed, let him meet me behind this valley. So none of them followed him.) And he related on the authority of al-Barāʾ ؓ (who said: The first of the Emigrants who came to us was Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, then Ibn Umm Maktūm, then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb with twenty riders. We said: What has the Messenger of Allah ﷺ done? He said: He is on my track. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and Abū Bakr ؓ was with him).
