Translation

✧ In the year twenty-three, ʿUmar performed the pilgrimage with the wives of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and it was the last pilgrimage he performed with the people. From Abū ʿUthmān, Abū Ḥārithah, and al-Rabīʿ, with their chain of transmission, they said: ʿUmar performed the pilgrimage with the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, with their guardians [from among those] from whom they do not veil, and he placed at the front of their caravan ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf and at its rear ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. When he had sent them back, he departed with the two of them and al-ʿAbbās, and we left ʿAlī ﷺ in charge of the people. Then he hastened until he arrived at al-Jābiyah on the day of the battle, and the conquest came to him there. ʿUmar ؓ rode from al-Jābiyah intending the Jordan, and the Muslims and the people of the covenant stood for him. He came out to them on a donkey, with al-ʿAbbās before him on a horse. When the People of the Book saw him, they prostrated. He said: "Do not prostrate to a human being; prostrate to Allah." And he passed on. The priests and monks said: "We have not seen anyone more resembling the description of the disciples than this man." Then he entered the Jordan on a camel. When he reached the Jordan, he came upon a flooding of water, and the horses took to the right and left. He dismounted from his camel, led it through the water, and it crossed. Abū ʿUbaydah drew near to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, you are in the lands of the non-Arabs, and what I have seen of your self-abasement has grieved me, fearing that the patricians will use that against us." He remained silent until he entered. Then he went to the pulpit, and the people gathered around him. He summoned Abū ʿUbaydah and made him stand below him. He praised and extolled Allah and said: "O people, Allah has raised you and honored you with His religion, so seek honor through the religion and nobility, and you will be honored and the world will follow you. Do not seek honor through other than the religion, lest you be humiliated. By Allah, if I had warned you before now, I would have made an example of you." ʿUmar returned to Madinah in Muḥarram of the year seventeen—thus according to the narration of Sayf. Others say: That was in the year twenty-three. From ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, from Nāfiʿ, from Aslam, the client of ʿUmar, who said: The archon of al-Jābiyah prepared food for ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb in the church, and ʿUmar ate. Then the time of prayer came, and ʿUmar prayed with his companions in the church.
