The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ It is narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās that he said: The Byzantines took ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī, the Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ, captive. The tyrant said to him: “Become a Christian, or else I will kill you or throw you into the copper cauldron.” He said: “I will not do it.” So he called for a copper cauldron, filled it with oil and boiled it, and called for a man from the Muslims. He offered him Christianity, but he refused, so he threw him into the cauldron, and his bones appeared glistening. Then he said to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥudhāfah: “Become a Christian, or else I will throw you in.” He said: “I will not do it.” So he ordered that he be thrown into the cauldron. They bound his arms behind his back, and he wept. They said: “He has lost heart and wept.” He said: “Bring him back.” He said: “Do not think that I wept out of despair; rather, I wept because there is in me only one soul with which this will be done in the way of God, Mighty and Majestic. I would have wished that I had as many souls as the number of every hair on my body, and that you were given power over me to do this to each of them.” He said: He was impressed by him and wished to release him, and said: “Kiss my head and I will release you.” He said: “I will not do it.” He said: “Become a Christian and I will marry you to my daughter and share my kingdom with you.” He said: “I will not do it.” He said: “Kiss my head and I will release with you eighty of the Muslims.” He said: “As for this, then yes.” So he kissed his head, and he released him and eighty with him. When they came to ʿUmar, ʿUmar stood up to him and kissed his head. The Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ used to joke with ʿAbd Allāh, saying: “He kissed the head of the infidel.”
