The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The peace treaty of al-Hurmuzān and the people of Tustar with the Muslims Ibn Jarīr said: That was in the year seventeen according to the statement of Sayf and his narration, and another than him said: in the year sixteen, and another than him said: it was in the year nineteen. It was said: When al-Hurmuzān was defeated on the day of the market of al-Ahwāz and the Muslims conquered it, Ḥurqūṣ sent Jazʾ b. Muʿāwiyah in his pursuit by the command of ʿUmar to the market of al-Ahwāz, and he continued killing them until he reached the village of al-Shaghar, and al-Hurmuzān eluded him, so Jazʾ turned aside to Dawraq, which is the city of Surraq, and he took it completely, and he invited those who had fled to the jizyah, and they answered him, and he wrote to ʿUmar and ʿUtbah about that, and ʿUmar wrote to Ḥurqūṣ and to him to remain in what they had conquered until he commanded them with his order, so Jazʾ cultivated the lands, dug the canals, and revived the dead lands. And al-Hurmuzān corresponded with them seeking peace, and ʿUmar agreed to that and that what the Muslims had taken by their hands should remain theirs, then they made peace upon that, and al-Hurmuzān remained and the Muslims protected him when the Kurds attacked him, and he would come to them. And Ḥurqūṣ encamped on the mountain of al-Ahwāz, and it was difficult for the people to go back and forth to him, and that reached ʿUmar, so he wrote to him commanding him to descend to the plain, and not to make difficulty for any Muslim or covenant holder, and that no slackness or haste should overtake you, lest you disturb your worldly life and lose your hereafter. And Ḥurqūṣ remained until the day of Ṣiffīn, and he became a Ḥarūrī and witnessed al-Nahrawān with the Khawārij.
