The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
تَزَوَّجَ عُمَرُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ ، وَهِيَ ابْنَةُ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. وَكَانَ قَدْ خَطَبَهَا إِلَى عَلِيٍّ، فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِنَّهَا صَبِيَّةٌ، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكَ وَاللَّهِ مَا بِكَ ذَلِكَ، وَلَكِنْ قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا بِكَ، فَأَمَرَ عَلِيٌّ بِهَا فَصُنِعَتْ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ بِبُرْدٍ فَطَوَاهُ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: انْطَلِقِي بِهَذَا إِلَى أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ فَقُولِي: أَرْسَلَنِي أَبِي إِلَيْكَ وَهُوَ يُقْرِئُكَ السَّلَامَ وَيَقُولُ إِنْ رَضِيتَ الْبُرْدَ فَأَمْسِكْهُ، وَإِنْ سَخِطْتَهُ فَرُدَّهُ، فَلَمَّا أَتَتْ عُمَرَ قَالَ: بَارَكَ اللَّهُ فِيكِ وَفِي أَبِيكِ قَدْ رَضِينَا. قَالَتْ: فَرَجَعَتْ إِلَى أَبِيهَا، فَقَالَتْ: مَا نَشَرَ الْبُرْدَ وَمَا نَظَرَ إِلَّا إِلَيَّ، فَزَوَّجَهَا إِيَّاهُ، وَلَمْ تَكُنْ قَدْ بَلَغَتْ، فَدَخَلَ بِهَا فِي ذِي الْقِعْدَةِ، ثُمَّ وَلَدَتْ لَهُ زَيْدًا. وأَمْهَرَهَا أَرْبَعِينَ الْفًا. عَنِ الزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ بَكَّارٍ، قَالَ: كَانَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ خَطَبَ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ إِلَى عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَقَالَ لَهُ [عَلِيٌّ]: إِنَّهَا صَغِيرَةٌ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ: زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا أَبَا الْحَسَنِ، فَإِنِّي أَرْصُدُ مِنْ كَرَامَتِهَا مَا لَا يَرْصُدُ أَحَدٌ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عَلِيٌّ: أَنَا أَبْعَثُهَا إِلَيْكَ، فَإِنْ رَضِيتَهَا زَوَّجْتُكَهَا، فَبَعَثَهَا إِلَيْهِ بِبُرْدٍ، وَقَالَ لَهَا: قُولِي لَهُ: هَذَا الْبُرْدُ الَّذِي قُلْتُ لَكَ، فَقَالَتْ ذَلِكَ لِعُمَرَ، فَقَالَ: قُولِي: قَدْ رَضِيتُهُ ؓ، وَضَعَ يَدَهُ عَلَى سَاقِهَا وَكَشَفَهَا، فَقَالَتْ لَهُ: أَتَفْعَلُ هَذَا، لَوْلَا أَنَّكَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ لَكَسَرْتُ أَنْفَكَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَتْ حَتَّى جَاءَتْ أَبَاهَا، فَأَخْبَرَتْهُ الْخَبَرَ وَقَالَتْ: بَعَثْتَنِي إِلَى شَيْخِ سُوءٍ، فَقَالَ: مَهْلًا يَا بُنَيَّةُ، فَإِنَّهُ زَوْجُكِ، فَجَاءَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ إِلَى مَجْلِسِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ فِي الرَّوْضَةِ، وَكَانَ يَجْلِسُ فِيهِ الْمُهَاجِرُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ، فَجَلَسَ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: رَفِّئُونِي، فَقَالُوا: لِمَاذَا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، قَالَ: تَزَوَّجْتُ أُمَّ كُلْثُومٍ بِنْتَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: كُلُّ نَسَبٍ وَسَبَبٍ وَصِهْرٍ مُنْقَطِعٌ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ إِلَّا نَسَبِي وَسَبَبِي وَصِهْرِي، فَكَانَ لِي بِهِ السَّبَبُ وَالنَّسَبُ، وَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَجْمَعَ إِلَيْهِ الصِّهْرَ، فَرَفَّئُوهُ ؓ.
Translation
✧ ʿUmar married Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, and she is the daughter of Fāṭimah bt. the Messenger of God ﷺ. He had asked ʿAlī for her hand, and he said: O Commander of the Faithful, she is a young girl. He said: By God, that is not what is with you, but we have known what is with you. So ʿAlī ordered that she be prepared, then he ordered a cloak and folded it, then he said: Go with this to the Commander of the Faithful and say: My father sent me to you, and he greets you with peace and says: If you approve of the cloak, keep it, and if you dislike it, return it. When she came to ʿUmar, he said: God bless you and your father; we approve. She said: She returned to her father and said: He did not unfold the cloak nor look at anything except me. So he married her to him, and she had not yet reached puberty. He consummated the marriage with her in Dhū al-Qiʿdah, then she bore him Zayd. He gave her a dower of forty thousand. From al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, who said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ asked ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib for Umm Kulthūm, and [ʿAlī] said to him: She is young. ʿUmar said to him: Marry her to me, O Abū al-Ḥasan, for I seek from her honor what no one else seeks. ʿAlī said to him: I will send her to you, and if you approve of her, I will marry her to you. So he sent her to him with a cloak, and he said to her: Say to him: This is the cloak that I told you about. She said that to ʿUmar, and he said: Say: I have approved of it, ؓ, and he placed his hand on her shin and uncovered it. She said to him: Would you do this? Were you not the Commander of the Faithful, I would break your nose. Then she went out until she came to her father and told him the news and said: You sent me to a wicked old man. He said: Gently, my little daughter, for he is your husband. Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb came to the gathering of the Muhājirūn in al-Rawḍah, where the first Muhājirūn used to sit, and he sat with them and said: Congratulate me. They said: For what, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: I married Umm Kulthūm bt. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib. I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Every lineage, bond, and in-law relationship will be severed on the Day of Resurrection except my lineage, my bond, and my in-law relationship. I had with him the bond and the lineage, and I wanted to add the in-law relationship. So they congratulated him ؓ.
