Translation
✧ The building of the Sacred Mosque and the expansion therein In the year seventeen, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb performed ʿumrah and built the Sacred Mosque and expanded it, and he stayed in Makkah for twenty nights and married in Makkah the daughter of Ḥafṣ b. al-Mughīrah. He was told that she was barren, so he divorced her before consummating the marriage, and she returned to her first husband. He demolished the houses of a people who refused to sell, and he placed the prices of their homes in the public treasury until they took them. His ʿumrah was in Rajab, and he appointed Zayd b. Thābit as his deputy over Madinah. He ordered the renewal of the boundary markers of the sanctuary, and he ordered that to Makhramah b. Nawfal, al-Azhar b. ʿAbd ʿAwf, Ḥuwayṭib b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, and Saʿīd b. Yarbūʿ. Al-Wāqidī said: Kathīr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Muzanī narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: We arrived with ʿUmar in Makkah during the ʿumrah of the year seventeen, and he passed along the road. The people of the watering places spoke to him about building dwellings between Makkah and Madinah—and there had been no building before that—so he permitted them and stipulated to them that the wayfarer has more right to the shade and the water.
