The caliphate of ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb

Translation

✧ The Conquest of Māsabadhān from the Land of Iraq When Hāshim b. ʿUtbah returned from Jalūlāʾ to al-Madāʾin, Saʿd learned that Ādhīn b. al-Hurmuzān had gathered a band of Persians. He wrote to ʿUmar about that, and ʿUmar wrote to him: 'Send an army and appoint Ḍirār b. al-Khaṭṭāb over them.' Ḍirār set out with an army from al-Madāʾin, with Ibn al-Hudhayl al-Asadī at the head of his vanguard. Ibn al-Hudhayl advanced ahead of the army and met Ādhīn and his companions before Ḍirār reached him. Ibn al-Hudhayl defeated the band of Persians, and Ādhīn b. al-Hurmuzān was taken prisoner while his companions fled. Ibn al-Hudhayl ordered that Ādhīn's neck be struck before him, and he pursued the routed ones until he reached Māsabadhān — a large city — and he took it by force. Its people fled into the mouths of the mountain passes and the mountains, but he summoned them and they responded to him. He imposed the jizyah on those who did not submit to Islam and remained as its governor until Saʿd moved from al-Madāʾin to al-Kūfah. It is said that its conquest took place after the Battle of Nahāwand.
