Translation
✧ The Conquest of Qarqīsiyāʾ and Hīt in the Year Sixteen Ibn Jarīr and others said: When Hāshim returned from Jalūlāʾ to al-Madāʾin, the people of al-Jazīrah had reinforced the people of Ḥimṣ against fighting Abū ʿUbaydah and Khālid — when Heraclius was at Qinnasrīn — and the people of al-Jazīrah gathered in the city of Hīt. Saʿd wrote to ʿUmar about that, and he wrote to him to send an army against them, and to appoint over them ʿUmar b. Mālik b. ʿUtbah b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf. He marched with the Muslims who were with him to Hīt and found that they had dug a trench around themselves. He besieged them for a time but did not prevail over them. He marched with a detachment of his companions, leaving al-Ḥārith b. Yazīd in charge of the siege of Hīt. ʿUmar b. Mālik slipped away to Qarqīsiyāʾ and took it by force, and they submitted to paying the jizyah. He wrote to his deputy at Hīt that if they did not make peace, he should dig a trench behind their trench and make gates for it on his side. When that reached them, they submitted to making peace.
