The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ

Translation

✧ SECTION ON HIS COMPANIONSHIP AND THE BATTLES HE WITNESSED The scholars said: Abū Bakr accompanied the Prophet ﷺ from the time he embraced Islam until he passed away, never parting from him in travel or in residence, except when the Prophet ﷺ permitted him to go out for Hajj or a military expedition. He witnessed all the battles with him, migrated with him, and left his family and children behind, out of desire for God and His Messenger ﷺ. He was his companion in the cave. God Almighty said: “The second of two, when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; indeed God is with us’” [al-Tawbah: 40]. He undertook the support of the Messenger of God ﷺ in more than one situation, and he has fine recorded deeds in the battles. He stood firm on the day of Uḥud and the day of Ḥunayn, when the people fled, as will come in the section on his courage ؓ. Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from Abū Hurayrah that he said: “The angels gave one another good tidings on the day of Badr and said: ‘Do you not see Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq with the Messenger of God ﷺ in the shelter?!’” Aḥmad, Abū Yaʿlā, and al-Ḥākim transmitted from ʿAlī that he said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to me and to Abū Bakr on the day of Badr: “With one of you is Jibrīl, and with the other is Mīkāʾīl.” Ibn ʿAsākir transmitted from Ibn Sīrīn: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakr al-Ṣiddīq was on the day of Badr with the polytheists. When he embraced Islam, he said to his father: “You exposed yourself to me on the day of Badr, but I turned away from you and did not kill you.” Abū Bakr said to him: “But if you had exposed yourself to me, I would not have turned away from you.” Ibn Qutaybah said: “The meaning of ‘ahdafta’ is ‘you became visible as a target,’ and from this the elevated structure is called ‘hadaf.’”
