Translation

✧ [Al-Thaniyy and al-Zumayl] Then Khālid departed from al-Muṣayyakh, and he began with al-Thaniyy, and he fell upon its people by night and took captives, and he sent a fifth of God's share to Abū Bakr. Then ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ purchased al-Ṣahbāʾ, daughter of Rabīʿah b. Bujayr, and took her as a concubine, and she bore him ʿAmr and Ruqayyah. Khālid had previously sent al-Muthannā to Iraq, and he raided a market in which there was a gathering of Quḍāʿah, and that is the location of Baghdad today. And Khālid struck out into the desert, intending to proceed from Qurāqir to Suwā, and they are two watering places belonging to Kalb. He feared losing the way, so they directed him to Rāfiʿ b. ʿAmr al-Ṭāʾī, who was a guide. He said to Khālid: "A lone rider fears for himself in this desolate waste, and none traverses it except one who is beguiled, and you have with you the baggage train." Khālid said: "I must traverse it." Rāfiʿ said: "Whoever of you can make the ear of his mount reach water, let him do so." Then he said: "Find me twenty huge, fat camels." They were brought to him, and he kept them thirsty until thirst had exhausted them. Then he gave them water to drink until they were fully watered. Then he cut their lips and gathered them together so that they would not chew their cud, lest the water spoil in their bellies. Then he said to Khālid: "Set out." So he set out, and whenever they halted, he slaughtered four of those camels, took the water from their bellies, and gave it to the horses to drink, and the people drank from what they had carried with them. When it was the morning of the sixth day, he slaughtered all the remaining camels. Khālid said to Rāfiʿ: "Woe to you, what do you have?" He said: "I have attained the watering place, if God wills." Rāfiʿ had sore eyes on that day, and he said: "Look, do you see a boxthorn tree on the edge of the road?" They said: "No." He said: "Indeed we belong to God and to Him we return. By God, then I have perished and caused you to perish. May you be without a father! Look." They did not cease searching for it until they saw it. He said: "Seek water near it." They looked and found a spring, so they drank and were satisfied. Rāfiʿ said: "I have never traversed it except with my father when I was a boy." One of the Muslims said in rajaz verse about that: For God is the excellence of Khālid, how he found the way In the time of Qurāqir to Suwā, five days when the army traversed it it wept; No human before you, I think, has ever traversed it; At morning the people praise the night journey. He said: Then Khālid raided some people of Thaʿlab and Bahrāʾ and Ghassān.
