The caliphate of Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq ᴿᴬ
Translation
✧ In this year Muʿādh b. Jabal and the governors of Yemen wrote to Abū Bakr seeking his permission to come. He wrote to them: “The Messenger of God ﷺ sent you for the purpose for which he sent you concerning his affair. Whoever has carried out the command of the Messenger of God ﷺ and wishes to return may return and appoint a successor over his work, and whoever wishes to remain may remain.” So they returned. When Muʿādh arrived, he met ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, and they embraced, and each of them consoled his companion for the loss of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Muʿādh had the land tax with him, and he had with him servants whom he had set aside. ʿUmar said: “Who are these?” He said: “They were given to me.” ʿUmar said: “Obey me and bring them to Abū Bakr so that he may make them lawful for you.” Muʿādh said: “No, by my life, I will not go to Abū Bakr with my own property for him to make it lawful for me.” ʿUmar said: “It is not yours.” When night came and morning came, he went to him and said: “Last night I saw myself as if drawing near to the Fire while you were holding my waist-wrapper. I found the matter as you said.” So he went to Abū Bakr and sought their release, and he released them. While Muʿādh was standing praying, he saw all his slaves praying. He said to them: “What are you doing?” They said: “We are praying.” He said: “To whom?” They said: “To God Almighty.” He said: “Then go, for you belong to God.” So he freed them.
