The wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, and ᴿᴬ
[ زَوَاجُهُ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ خُزَيْمَةَ ] وَتَزَوَّجَ ﷺ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ خُزَيْمَةَ، وَهِيَ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ مَنَافِ بْنِ هِلَالِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ صَعْصَعَةَ، وَيُقَالُ لَهَا: أُمُّ الْمَسَاكِينِ.، لِرَحْمَتِهَا إيَّاهُمْ، وَرِقَّتِهَا عَلَيْهِمْ، زَوَّجَهُ إيَّاهَا قَبِيصَةُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو الْهِلَالِيُّ وكَانَتْ قَبْلَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ. رَوَاهُمَا ابْنُ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ وَلَمَّا خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ جَعَلَتْ أَمْرَهَا إِلَيْهِ، فَتَزَوَّجَهَا، وَأَشْهَدَ، وَأَصْدَقَهَا اثْنَتَيْ عَشْرَةَ أُوقِيَّةً وَكِسَاءً. وَرَوَى الطَّبَرَانِيُّ بِرِجَالِ الصَّحِيحِ عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى - قَالَ: تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ خُزَيْمَةَ الْهِلَالِيَّةَ أُمَّ الْمَسَاكِينِ كَانَتْ قَبْلَهُ عِنْدَ الْحُصَيْنِ أَوْ عِنْدَ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَهِيَ أَوَّلُ نِسَائِهِ مَوْتًا. وَقَالَ ابْنُ الْكَلْبِيِّ: كَانَتْ عِنْدَ الطُّفَيْلِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، فَطَلَّقَهَا، فَتَزَوَّجَهَا أَخُوهُ عُبَيْدَةُ، فَقُتِلَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ شَهِيدًا، ثُمَّ حَلَفَ عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ أُخْتَهَا لِأُمِّهَا مَيْمُونَةَ كَذَا قَالَ ابْنُ الْكَلْبِيِّ، فِي رَمَضَانَ عَلَى رَأْسِ أَحَدٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ شَهْرًا بَعْدَ حَفْصَةَ. قَالَ ابْنُ سَعْدٍ: مَاتَتْ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَتَزَوَّجَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ وَأَسْكَنَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ فِي بَيْتِهَا. ورَوَى الطَّبَرَانِيُّ بِرِجَالٍ ثِقَاتٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ - ؓ قَالَ -: تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ خُزَيْمَةَ وَهِيَ أُمُّ الْمَسَاكِينِ سُمِّيَتْ بِذَلِكَ، لِكَثْرَةِ إِطْعَامِهَا الْمَسَاكِينَ، وَتُوُفِّيَتْ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَيٌّ. وقَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ، وَقَتَادَةُ: لَمْ تَلْبَثْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَّا يَسِيرًا وَتُوُفِّيَتْ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَالنَّبِيُّ ﷺ حَيٌّ، وَقَدْ مَكَثَتْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ثَمَانِيَةَ أَشْهُرٍ، وَقِيلَ: شَهْرَيْنِ وَقِيلَ: ثَلَاثَةً. وَالصَّحِيحُ أَنَّهَا مَاتَتْ فِي رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ، وَقِيلَ: الْآخَرِ سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ، وَدُفِنَتْ بِالْبَقِيعِ ؓ وَقَدْ بَلَغَتْ ثَلَاثِينَ سَنَةً أَوْ نَحْوَهَا.
Translation
✧ [His marriage to Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah] He ﷺ married Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah, and she was from Banū ʿAbd Manāf b. Hilāl b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah. She was called Umm al-Masākīn (Mother of the Poor) because of her mercy toward them and her compassion upon them. Qabīṣah b. ʿAmr al-Hilālī married her to him. She had been, before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with al-Ṭufayl b. al-Ḥārith. Both of these were narrated by Ibn Abī Khaythamah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, she placed her affair in his hands, so he married her, took witnesses, and gave her a dowry of twelve ūqiyyahs and a cloak. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated with the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ from Ibn Isḥāq—may Allah Almighty have mercy on him—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah al-Hilāliyyah, Umm al-Masākīn. She had been before him with al-Ḥuṣayn or with al-Ṭufayl b. al-Ḥārith in Madinah, and she was the first of his wives to die. Ibn al-Kalbī said: She was with al-Ṭufayl b. al-Ḥārith, and he divorced her, then her brother ʿUbaydah married her, and he was killed as a martyr on the day of Badr. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took an oath concerning her before marrying her maternal sister Maymūnah—thus said Ibn al-Kalbī—in Ramadan, thirty-one months after Ḥafṣah. Ibn Saʿd said: She died before the Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salamah, and he lodged Umm Salamah in her house. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated with trustworthy men from al-Zuhrī—ؓ—who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married Zaynab bt. Khuzaymah, and she was Umm al-Masākīn. She was named that because of her abundant feeding of the poor. She died while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still alive. Al-Zuhrī and Qatādah said: She remained with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ only a short while and died in Madinah while the Prophet ﷺ was still alive. She had stayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ eight months—or it was said: two months—or it was said: three. The correct view is that she died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal—or it was said: Rabīʿ al-Ākhir—in the year four, and was buried in al-Baqīʿ ؓ. She had reached thirty years of age or about that.
