Translation
✧ [His marriage to Ḥafṣah] And the Prophet ﷺ married Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. She had previously been married to Khunays b. Ḥudhāfah b. Qays b. ʿAdī b. Ḥudhāfah b. Sahm b. ʿAmr b. Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb b. Luʾayy, who died leaving her a believer. He was among those who witnessed Badr, and he emigrated with her to Madinah and died there from wounds he sustained at Badr; and it was said: rather at Uḥud, with various authorities giving weight to each view, and the first is better known. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her in Shaʿbān at the beginning of thirty months since his emigration according to the first view, and after Uḥud according to the second view. Imām Aḥmad, the two Shaykhs, and al-Nasāʾī narrated from ʿUmar ؓ that he said: Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar suffered the loss of Khunays b. Ḥudhāfah al-Sahmī, who was one of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and had witnessed Badr, and he died in Madinah. ʿUmar said: I met ʿUthmān and offered Ḥafṣah to him, saying: If you wish, I will marry you to Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar. He said: I will consider my situation. I waited for some nights, then he met me and said: It has become clear to me that I should not marry on this day of mine. ʿUmar said: Then I met Abū Bakr and said: If you wish, I will marry you to Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar. Abū Bakr remained silent and did not return anything to me, so I was more upset with him than I had been with ʿUthmān. I waited for some nights, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and I married her to him. Then Abū Bakr met me and said: Perhaps you were upset with me when you offered Ḥafṣah to me and I did not return anything to you? I said: Yes. He said: Nothing prevented me from returning to you regarding what you offered me except that I knew that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had mentioned her, and I would not divulge the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ; and if the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had left her, I would have accepted her. Her father ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb married her to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her a dower of four hundred dirhams. Allah—blessed and exalted is He—commanded His Prophet ﷺ to take her back when he divorced her, and said: She is your wife in Paradise. Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah narrated from Ibn ʿUmar ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced Ḥafṣah and then took her back. Abū Bakr b. Abī Khaythamah and al-Ṭabarānī narrated with the men of the Ṣaḥīḥ from Qays b. Zayd that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced Ḥafṣah bt. ʿUmar ؓ, and her two maternal uncles, Ḥudhāfah and ʿUthmān the two sons of Maẓʿūn, entered upon her and she wept and said: By Allah, he did not divorce me out of satiety. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came, and I wrapped myself in my cloak, and he said to me: Jibrīl said to me: Take Ḥafṣah back, for she is one who fasts much and stands much in prayer, and she is your wife in Paradise. [Abū Nuʿaym] narrated from ʿUqbah b. ʿĀmir ؓ that he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorced Ḥafṣah, and that reached ʿUmar, so he poured dust on his head and said: Allah pays no heed to ʿUmar and his daughter. Afterwards, on the morrow, Jibrīl descended upon the Prophet ﷺ and said: Allah, exalted is He, commands you to take Ḥafṣah back as a mercy to ʿUmar. Then he wanted to divorce her a second time, and Jibrīl said to him: Do not divorce her, for she is one who fasts much and stands much in prayer.
