✧ [His marriage to Umm Salamah] He ﷺ married Umm Salamah Hind bt. Abī Umayyah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm. She had previously been with Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Asad, whose mother was the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Barrah bt. his uncle Abī Ṭālib. She bore to Abū Salamah: Salamah, ʿUmar, Ruqayyah, and Zaynab. Abū Salamah ؓ died in the year four, having participated in Badr and Uḥud. He was struck by an arrow in his upper arm, and he remained a month treating it; then the wound healed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him at the crescent of Muḥarram, thirty-five months after his emigration, and sent with him one hundred fifty men to Qaṭan—which is a mountain. He was away twenty-nine nights, then returned to Madinah, and his wound reopened, and he died from it on the eighth of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year four. Umm Salamah then observed her waiting period, and she was taken in marriage on the twentieth of the said Shawwāl in the year four. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her in the remaining nights of the said Shawwāl. Were there no virtue of hers except her advice to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to shave in the story of Ḥudaybiyyah when most of the Companions refrained, it would have sufficed her. Abū ʿUbaydah Maʿmar b. al-Muthannā and Abū ʿUmar said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her after the battle of Badr in Shawwāl of the year two, but this is baseless, because Abū ʿUmar said concerning the death of Abū Salamah: it was in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year three, and he did not marry her except after the completion of her waiting period following the death of Abū Salamah. It is related from Umm Salamah ؓ that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: "No Muslim is afflicted with a misfortune and says what Allah, Blessed and Exalted, commanded: 'Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my misfortune and give me in its place something better,' but Allah will give him in its place something better." Aḥmad b. Manīʿ and Abū Yaʿlā narrated with trustworthy narrators on the authority of ʿAmr b. Abī Salamah, and Imām al-Shāfiʿī—may Allah, Exalted, have mercy on him and be pleased with him—and Imām Aḥmad and Muslim and Ibn Abī Khaythamah on the authority of Umm Salamah, and al-Ḥārith through another route on the authority of Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām ؓ, that Abū Salamah came to Umm Salamah ؓ and she said: I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ something that is more pleasing to me than such and such—I do not know what to equate with it—I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: No one is afflicted with a misfortune, then performs the returning (istirjāʿ) at that time, and then says: 'O Allah, with You I seek recompense for my misfortune, so reward me in it and replace it for me with something better than it,' except that Allah will replace it for him with something better than it. When Abū Salamah died, I said it and He replaced me with one better than him: I kept saying, 'And who is better than Abū Salamah?' until I finally said it. When her waiting period ended, Abū Bakr sent to propose to her, but she refused. Then ʿUmar sent to propose to her, but she refused. She said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent to propose to her, and she said: Welcome to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. But I have three traits that I fear for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: I am an intensely jealous woman, I have children—meaning she had young children; in another narration: I have dependents—and no one of my guardians is present here to give me in marriage. In the ḥadīth of Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, she said: One like me is not to be married; as for me, I have no child in me, and I am jealous, and I have dependents. ʿUmar heard how she had responded to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and became angry for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ more severely than he would for himself when she had refused, so he met her and said: Are you the one who refuses the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? She said: O Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, I have such and such. So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her and said: As for what you mentioned that you are jealous, I will pray to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, to remove your jealousy. As for what you mentioned that you are afflicted with children, Allah will suffice you for your children. In another narration: As for the dependents, they are to Allah and His Messenger. As for there being no one here of your guardians to marry you, there is no one of your guardians, present or absent, who dislikes me. In the ḥadīth of Abū Bakr in one wording: "For there is no one of them, present or attending, who seeks my approval, and I am older than him." So she said to her son ʿUmar: Marry me to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: So he married her to him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, I have not diminished for you what I gave your sister so-and-so." Thābit said to the son of Umm Salamah: What had he given so-and-so? He said: He gave her two dirhams from which she made her companion and two camel litters and a cushion stuffed with palm fiber. Then he left her. Then he came to her a second time while she was nursing Zaynab. When she saw him coming, she placed the girl in her lap. He greeted and then returned. He came to her a third time, and when she saw him, she placed the girl in her lap. She said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was shy and noble, so he returned. ʿUmar said: Then ʿAmmār b. Yāsir came and took her from her lap. In one wording: "ʿAmmār b. Yāsir noticed that, and he was her maternal half-brother, so he snatched Zaynab from her lap and said: Give her. In another wording: Leave this one who has prevented the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her and began to look around the room, and he did not see the girl in her lap. Her name was Zaynab. He said: Where is Zaynab? She said: ʿAmmār came and took her. In the ḥadīth of Abū Bakr, the Prophet ﷺ said: "You will find that I came to you tonight." She said: So I put down my burdens and brought out some grains of barley that were in a stone mortar, and I took some fat and thickened it. He spent the night, and when he rose in the morning, he said: "You have honor with your people. If you wish, I will give you seven nights, and I will give the other women seven nights." ʿUmar said: She was among the women as if she was not one of them, feeling no jealousy at all. Al-Ṭabarānī narrated with the narrators of the Ṣaḥīḥ on the authority of Umm Salamah ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to her, folded his cloak, placed it on the threshold of the door, leaned upon it, and said: Is there a proposal for you, O Umm Salamah? She said: I am an intensely jealous woman, and I fear that something the Prophet ﷺ dislikes may appear from me. So he left. Then he returned and said: Is there, O Umm Salamah? If you have an increase in your dowry, we will increase it for you. She repeated her words. Then Umm Salamah said: O mother of ʿAbd, do you know what the women of Quraysh are saying? They say: She only refused Muḥammad because she is a young woman of Quraysh, younger than him, and with more wealth than him. So she went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he married her. Ibn Saʿd narrated from her ؓ that she said: I said to Abū Salamah: There is no woman whose husband dies while he is of the people of Paradise and she is of the people of Paradise, then she does not marry after him, but Allah, Exalted, will join them in Paradise. Likewise, if the woman dies and the man remains after her. So come, let us covenant that you will not marry after me, and I will not marry after you. He said: Will you obey me? I said: I did not consult you except because I want to obey you. He said: Then if I die, marry. Then he said: O Allah, provide Umm Salamah after me with a man better than me, so that he will not grieve her or harm her. She said: When he died, I said: Who is this one who is better for me than Abū Salamah? I remained for a time, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and stood at the door, and he mentioned something similar to what preceded.
