The wives of the Prophet, blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, and ᴿᴬ
[ زَوَاجُهُ بِزَيْنَبِ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ ] وَتَزَوَّجَ ﷺ زَيْنَبَ بِنْتَ جَحْشِ بْنِ رِئَابِ بْنِ أَسَدِ بْنِ خُزَيْمَةَ، وَأُمُّهَا أُمَيْمَةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ عَمَّةُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ، زوَّجَهُ إيَّاهَا أَخُوهَا أَبُو أَحْمَدَ بْنِ جَحْشٍ، وَأَصْدَقَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَرْبَعَ مِئَةِ دِرْهَمٍ، وَكَانَتْ قَبْلَهُ عِنْدَ زَيْدِ بْنِ حَارِثَةَ، مَوْلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي قصة تَزْوِيجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِهَا وَأَنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى، زَوَّجَهَا وَاسْتَخَارَ بِهَا رَبَّهَا حِينَ خَطَبَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَنَزَلَ قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ [الْأَحْزَابِ 37 ] الْآيَاتِ. رَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي خَيْثَمَةَ عَنْ مَعْمَرِ بْنِ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ: تَزَوَّجَهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ مِنَ الْهِجْرَةِ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَقِيلَ: سَنَةَ أَرْبَعٍ، وَقِيلَ: سَنَةَ خَمْسٍ وَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِنْتُ خَمْسٍ وَثَلَاثِينَ سَنَةً. فَخْرِهَا عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِتَزْوِيجِ اللَّهِ - تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى - إِيَّاهَا رَسُولَهُ ﷺ . كَانَتْ تَفْتَخِرُ عَلَى نِسَاءِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ بِأَنَّهَا بِنْتُ عَمَّتِهِ، وَبِأَنَّ اللَّهَ - تَعَالَى - زَوَّجَهَا لَهُ وَهُنَّ زَوَّجَهُنَّ أَوْلِيَاؤُهُنَّ. [رَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ قَالَ: جَاءَ زَيْدُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ يَشْكُو فَجَعَلَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ يَقُولُ: «اتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَأَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ » قَالَ أَنَسٌ: لَوْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَاتِمًا شَيْئًا لَكَتَمَ هَذِهِ، قَالَ: فَكَانَتْ زَيْنَبُ تَفْخَرُ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ تَقُولُ: زَوَّجَكُنَّ أَهْلُوكُنَّ وَزَوَّجَنِي اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مِنْ فَوْقِ سَبْعِ سَمَوَاتٍ ]. وَلِيمَتِهِ ﷺ عَلَيْهَا وَفِي هَدِيَّةِ أُمِّ سُلَيْمٍ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَيْلَةَ دُخُولِهِ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ . رَوَى ابْنُ سَعْدٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ قَالَ: تَزَوَّجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَدَخَلَ بِأَهْلِهِ فَصَنَعَتْ أُمُّ سُلَيْمٍ حَيْسًا مِنْ عَجْوَةٍ فِي تَوْرٍ مِنْ فَخَّارٍ قَدْرَ مَا يَكْفِيهِ وَصَاحِبَتَهُ وَقَالَتْ: اذْهَبْ بِهِ إِلَيْهِ. فَدَخَلْتُ عَلَيْهِ وَذَلِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْزِلَ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ، فَقَالَ: «ضَعْهُ ». فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجِدَارِ، فَقَالَ لِي: «ادْعُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَلِيًّا ». وَذَكَرَ نَاسًا مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ سَمَّاهُمْ. فَجَعَلْتُ أَعْجَبُ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ مَنْ أَمَرَنِي أَنْ أَدْعُوَهُ وَقِلَّةِ الطَّعَامِ، إِنَّمَا هُوَ طَعَامٌ يَسِيرٌ وَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَعْصِيَهُ، فَدَعَوْتُهُمْ فَقَالَ: «انْظُرْ مَنْ كَانَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَادْعُهُ ». فَجَعَلْتُ آتِي الرَّجُلَ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي أَوْ هُوَ نَائِمٌ فَأَقُولُ: أَجِبْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَإِنَّهُ أَصْبَحَ الْيَوْمَ عَرُوسًا، حَتَّى امْتَلَأَ الْبَيْتُ، فَقَالَ لِي: «هَلْ بَقِيَ فِي الْمَسْجِدِ أَحَدٌ » ؟ قُلْتُ: لَا. قَالَ: «فَانْظُرْ مَنْ كَانَ فِي الطَّرِيقِ فَادْعُهُمْ ». قَالَ: فَدَعَوْتُ حَتَّى امْتَلَأَتِ الْحُجْرَةُ، فَقَالَ: «هَلْ بَقِيَ مِنْ أَحَدٍ » ؟ قُلْتُ: لَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ. قَالَ: «هَلُمَّ التَّوْرَ ». فَوَضَعْتُهُ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ فَوَضَعَ أَصَابِعَهُ الثَّلَاثَ فِيهِ وَغَمَزَهُ وَقَالَ لِلنَّاسِ: «كُلُوا بِسْمِ اللَّهِ ». فَجَعَلْتُ أَنْظُرُ إِلَى التَّمْرِ يَرْبُو أَوْ إِلَى السَّمْنِ كَأَنَّهُ عُيُونٌ تَنْبُعُ حَتَّى أَكَلَ كُلُّ مَنْ فِي الْبَيْتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْحُجْرَةِ وَبَقِيَ فِي التَّوْرِ قَدْرُ مَا جِئْتُ بِهِ، فَوَضَعْتُهُ عِنْدَ زَوْجَتِهِ ثُمَّ خَرَجْتُ إِلَى أُمِّي لِأُعَجِّبَهَا مِمَّا رَأَيْتُ، فَقَالَتْ: لَا تَعْجَبْ، لَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَأْكُلَ مِنْهُ أَهْلُ الْمَدِينَةِ كُلُّهُمْ لَأَكَلُوا. فَقُلْتُ لِأَنَسٍ: كَمْ تَرَاهُمْ بَلَغُوا ؟ قَالَ: أَحَدًا وَسَبْعِينَ رَجُلًا، وَأَنَا أَشُكُّ فِي اثْنَيْنِ وَسَبْعِينَ. وَرَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَابْنُ مَنِيعٍ بِسَنَدٍ صَحِيحٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ ؓ قَالَ: أَوْلَمَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَى زَيْنَبَ فَأَشْبَعَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ خُبْزًا وَلَحْمًا حَتَّى امْتَدَّ وَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ وَبَقِيَ رَهْطٌ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ فِي الْبَيْتِ وَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - ﷺ، فَصَنَعَ كَمَا كَانَ يَصْنَعُ إِذَا تَزَوَّجَ فَأَتَى أُمَّهَاتِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِنَّ وَسَلَّمْنَ عَلَيْهِ وَدَعَا لَهُنَّ ثُمَّ رَجَعَ وَأَنَا مَعَهُ.
Translation
✧ [His marriage to Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh] And he ﷺ married Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh b. Riʾāb b. Asad b. Khuzaymah. Her mother was Umaymah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Her brother Abū Aḥmad b. Jaḥsh gave her in marriage to him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave her a dower of four hundred dirhams. She had previously been with Zayd b. Ḥārithah, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, in the story of the Prophet's ﷺ marriage to her, and that Allah the Exalted married her to him and sought the good of her Lord for her when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proposed to her, and the saying of the Exalted was revealed: "And you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose" [al-Aḥzāb 37] and the following verses. Ibn Abī Khaythamah narrated from Maʿmar b. al-Muthannā, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married her in the year three of the Hijrah in Madinah. It is also said: in the year four, and it is said: in the year five, and she was then thirty-five years old. Her pride over the wives of the Prophet ﷺ was due to Allah—Blessed and Exalted—marrying her to His Messenger ﷺ. She used to pride herself over the wives of the Prophet ﷺ by being the daughter of his paternal aunt, and by Allah—the Exalted—marrying her to him, whereas their guardians had married them to him. [Al-Bukhārī narrated from Anas ؓ, who said: Zayd b. Ḥārithah came complaining, and the Prophet ﷺ kept saying: "Fear Allah and keep your wife to yourself." Anas said: If the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were to conceal anything, he would have concealed this. He said: Zaynab used to pride herself over the wives of the Prophet ﷺ, saying: "Your families married you, while Allah the Exalted married me from above seven heavens."] His ﷺ wedding feast for her, and the gift of Umm Sulaym to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the night he consummated his marriage with Zaynab. Ibn Saʿd narrated from Anas ؓ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ married, and he entered upon his wife. Umm Sulaym made ḥays from pressed dates in a stoneware vessel, enough for him and his companion, and she said: "Take it to him." I entered upon him, and that was before the verse of the ḥijāb was revealed. He said: "Put it down." I placed it between him and the wall. He said to me: "Invite Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān, and ʿAlī." And he mentioned some people from his companions whom he named. I began to marvel at the large number of those he ordered me to invite and the small amount of food, for it was only a little food, and I disliked to disobey him, so I invited them. Then he said: "Look for whoever is in the mosque and invite him." I began to go to a man while he was praying or sleeping and say: "Answer the Messenger of Allah, for today he has become a bridegroom," until the house was full. He said to me: "Is there anyone left in the mosque?" I said: "No." He said: "Then look for whoever is on the road and invite them." He said: I invited until the room was full. He said: "Is there anyone left?" I said: "No, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Bring the vessel." I placed it before him, and he put three of his fingers in it and pressed it, and he said to the people: "Eat, in the name of Allah." I began to look at the dates growing, or at the clarified butter as if it were springs gushing forth, until everyone in the house and in the room ate, and there remained in the vessel the same amount as what I had brought. I placed it with his wife, then I went out to my mother to amaze her with what I had seen. She said: "Do not be amazed; if Allah willed that all the people of Madinah eat from it, they would eat." I said to Anas: "How many do you think they reached?" He said: "Seventy-one men, and I doubt about seventy-two." Ibn Abī Shaybah and Ibn Manīʿ narrated with a sound chain from Anas ؓ, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ held a wedding feast for Zaynab and satisfied the Muslims with bread and meat until it was prolonged, and the people left, while a group remained conversing in the house. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and did as he used to do when he married, going to the Mothers of the Believers. He greeted them and they greeted him and supplicated for them, then he returned with me.
