Preparation of the Prophet ﷺ and his burial
مَنْ كَانَ آخِرَ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِهِ فِي قَبْرِهِ ﷺ قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَحَدَّثَنِي أَبِي إسْحَاقُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ مِقْسَمٍ أَبِي الْقَاسِمِ، مَوْلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ، عَنْ مَوْلَاهُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، قَالَ: اعْتَمَرْتُ مَعَ عَلِيِّ بْنِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ رِضْوَانُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ فِي زَمَانِ عُمَرَ أَوْ زَمَانِ عُثْمَانَ، فَنَزَلَ عَلَى أُخْتِهِ أُمِّ هَانِئٍ بِنْتِ أَبِي طَالِبٍ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ عُمْرَتِهِ رَجَعَ فَسُكِبَ لَهُ غِسْلٌ، فَاغْتَسَلَ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ مِنْ غَسْلِهِ دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ نَفَرٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِرَاقِ، فَقَالُوا: يَا أَبَا حَسَنٍ، جِئْنَا نَسْأَلُكَ عَنْ أَمْرٍ نُحِبُّ أَنْ تُخْبِرَنَا عَنْهُ ؟ قَالَ: أَظُنُّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ يُحَدِّثُكُمْ أَنَّهُ كَانَ أَحْدَثَ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. قَالُوا: أَجَلْ، عَنْ ذَلِكَ جِئْنَا نَسْأَلُكَ؛ قَالَ: كَذَبَ؛ قَالَ: أَحْدَثُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُثَمُ بْنُ عَبَّاسٍ وَرَوَى أَيْضًا ابْنُ سَعْدٍ بِرِجَالٍ ثِقَاتٍ عَنْ أَبِي عَسِيبٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَمَّا وُضِعَ فِي لَحْدِهِ، قَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ: إِنَّهُ قَدْ بَقِيَ مِنْ قِبَلِ رِجْلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ لَمْ تُصْلِحُوهُ، قَالُوا: فَادْخُلْ فَأَصْلِحْهُ، فَدَخَلَ فَمَسَحَ قَدَمَيْهِ ﷺ ثُمَّ قَالَ: أَهِيلُوا عَلَيَّ التُّرَابَ! فَأَهَالُوا عَلَيْهِ التُّرَابَ حَتَّى بَلَغَ أَنْصَافَ سَاقَيْهِ، فَخَرَجَ فَجَعَلَ يَقُولُ: أَنَا أَحْدَثُكُمْ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ. وَرَوَى الْبَيْهَقِيُّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ قَالَ: لَمَّا وُضِعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي لَحْدِهِ أَلْقَى الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ خَاتَمَهُ فِي قَبْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: إِنَّمَا أَلْقَيْتُهُ لِتَنْزِلَ فَنَزَلَ فَأَعْطَاهُ إِيَّاهُ أَوْ أَمَرَ رَجُلًا فَأَعْطَاهُ. وَرَوَى ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ وَأَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ عَنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ لَأَنَا آخِرُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَضَرْنَا وَلَحَدْنَا، فَلَمَّا حَضَرُوا وَدَفَنُوا أَلْقَيْتُ الْفَأْسَ فِي الْقَبْرِ، فَقُلْتُ: الْفَأْسَ الْفَأْسَ، فَأَخَذْتُهُ وَمَسَحْتُ بِيَدِي عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَرُوِيَ أَيْضًا بِإِسْنَادٍ قَوِيٍّ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي مَرْحَبٍ قَالَ: نَزَلَ فِي قَبْرِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ أَرْبَعَةٌ: أَحَدُهُمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ، وَكَانَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ يَدَّعِي أَنَّهُ أَحْدَثُ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَيَقُولُ: أَخَذْتُ خَاتَمِي، فَأَلْقَيْتُهُ، وَقُلْتُ: خَاتَمِي سَقَطَ مِنْ يَدِي لِأَمَسَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَكُونَ آخِرَ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِهِ. قَالَ الْحَاكِمُ: أَصَحُّ الْأَقَاوِيلِ أَنَّ آخِرَ النَّاسِ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُثَمُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ. قَالَ ابْنُ كَثِيرٍ: وَقَوْلُ مَنْ قَالَ: إِنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ كَانَ آخِرَهُمْ عَهْدًا لَيْسَ بِصَحِيحٍ؛ لِأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَحْضُرْ دَفْنَهُ فَضْلًا عَنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ آخِرَهُمْ عَهْدًا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قُلْتُ: فِي كَوْنِهِ لَمْ يَحْضُرْ دَفْنَهُ نَظَرٌ لِمَا تَقَدَّمَ.
Translation
✧ Who was the last of the people to have contact with him in his grave ﷺ Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār narrated to me, from Miqsam Abū al-Qāsim, the client of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal, from his patron ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, who said: I performed ʿumrah with ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ in the time of ʿUmar or the time of ʿUthmān. He stayed with his sister Umm Hāniʾ bt. Abī Ṭālib. When he finished his ʿumrah, he returned and water for washing was poured for him, and he washed. When he finished his washing, a group of people from Iraq entered upon him and said: O Abū al-Ḥasan, we have come to ask you about a matter we would like you to inform us about. He said: I think al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah tells you that he was the last of the people to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ. They said: Yes, that is what we came to ask you about. He said: He lied. He said: The last of the people to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ was Qutham b. ʿAbbās. Ibn Saʿd also narrated with trustworthy men from Abū ʿAsīb that when the Messenger of God ﷺ was placed in his laḥd, al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah said: There remains something at his feet that you have not set right. They said: Enter and set it right. So he entered and wiped his two feet ﷺ, then said: Pile the earth over me! So they piled the earth over him until it reached the middle of his shins, then he came out and began to say: I am the last of you to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ. Al-Bayhaqī narrated from ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah, who said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ was placed in his laḥd, al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah threw his ring into the grave of the Prophet ﷺ. ʿAlī said: You only threw it so that you could go down. So he went down and gave it to him, or he ordered a man and he gave it to him. Ibn Abī Shaybah and Aḥmad b. Manīʿ narrated from al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, who said: Indeed I am the last of the people to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ. We attended and we made the laḥd. When they attended and buried, I threw the pickaxe into the grave and said: The pickaxe, the pickaxe! So I took it and wiped my hand over the Messenger of God ﷺ. It was also narrated with a strong chain from Ibn Abī Marḥab, who said: Four men went down into the grave of the Prophet ﷺ: One of them was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf. Al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah used to claim that he was the last of the people to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he would say: I took my ring and threw it, and said: My ring fell from my hand, so that I might touch the Messenger of God ﷺ and be the last of the people to have contact with him. Al-Ḥākim said: The most correct of the statements is that the last of the people to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ was Qutham b. al-ʿAbbās. Ibn Kathīr said: The statement of those who said that al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah was the last of them to have contact is not correct, because he did not attend his burial, let alone be the last of them to have contact with the Messenger of God ﷺ. I say: Regarding his not attending the burial, there is room for examination due to what has preceded.
