Preparation of the Prophet ﷺ and his burial

Translation

✧ [The Muslims' trial after the death of the Messenger ﷺ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, the Muslims' calamity by it was immense. ʿĀʾishah, according to what has reached me, used to say: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, the Arabs apostatized, Judaism and Christianity reared up, hypocrisy emerged, and the Muslims became like sheep driven by rain on a winter night, for the loss of their Prophet ﷺ, until Allah gathered them around Abū Bakr. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah and other people of knowledge narrated to me that most of the people of Makkah, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died, were on the point of turning back from Islam, and they desired that, until ʿAttāb b. Asīd feared them and hid. Suhayl b. ʿAmr stood, praised Allah, lauded Him, then mentioned the death of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and said: That did not increase Islam except in strength. Whoever makes us doubt, we strike his neck. So the people turned back and refrained from what they had been on the point of doing, and ʿAttāb b. Asīd appeared. This is the station that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ meant in his saying to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb: Perhaps he will stand a station in which you will not find fault.
