The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death
Translation
✧ Regarding what has come concerning that he was taken in death, then was shown his seat in Paradise, then his soul was returned to him, then he was given the choice. Al-Imām Aḥmad, the two Shaykhs, Ibn Saʿd, al-Ṭabarānī, and Abū Nuʿaym related with a sound chain of transmission from ʿĀʾishah ؓ, who said: The Prophet ﷺ used to say while he was healthy: There is no prophet but that his soul is taken, then he sees his seat in Paradise, then his soul is returned to him, and he is given the choice between being returned to this world until he joins his Lord, so I had memorized that. Indeed, I was supporting him against my chest, and I looked at him when he had lost consciousness for a while until his neck went limp, so I said: He has passed away. She said: Then I recognized what he had said. Then he regained consciousness and raised his gaze toward the ceiling of the house, and I looked at him when his gaze rose, and I said: Then, by Allah, he will not choose anything but the highest companion, with Jibrīl, Mīkāʾīl, and Isrāfīl, and with those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor among the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous, and how excellent those companions are. So I knew that it was the very ḥadīth that he had related to us while he was healthy. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: And in the Maghāzī of Abū al-Aswad, from ʿUrwah: Jibrīl descended to him in that state and gave him the choice.
