Translation

✧ His use of the tooth-stick before his death ﷺ. [ʿAbd al-Awwal informed us; Ibn al-Muẓaffar informed us; Ibn Aʿyan informed us; al-Firabrī related to us; al-Bukhārī related to us; he said: Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd related to me; he said: ʿĪsā b. Yūnus related to us, from ʿUmar b. Saʿīd; he said: Ibn Abī Mulaykah informed me that Abū ʿAmr mentioned that the mawlā of ʿĀʾishah informed him that] ʿĀʾishah used to say: It is among God's favors upon me that the Messenger of God ﷺ died [in my house] and on my day and between my chest and my throat, and that God joined my saliva with his at his death. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān entered upon me with a tooth-stick in his hand while I was supporting the Messenger of God ﷺ. I saw him looking at it and knew that he loved the tooth-stick. I said: Shall I take it for you? He gestured with his head, meaning yes. I handed it to him, and it was too hard for him. I said: Shall I soften it for you? He gestured with his head, meaning yes. I softened it and he took it and passed it over his teeth. In front of him was a small leather water vessel—or a wooden bowl, ʿAmr was unsure—containing water. He began dipping his hands in the water and wiping his face with them, saying: "There is no god but God. Death has its pangs." Then he raised his hand and began saying: "In the highest company," until he was taken and his hand fell limp. In another narration: "a green palm branch he was pointing with while I was supporting the Messenger of God ﷺ against my chest. I saw him looking at it and knew that he loved the tooth-stick. I said: Shall I take it for you? He gestured with his head, meaning yes. I broke it, then chewed it and frayed it, and he took it and cleaned his teeth with it in the best manner he had ever done." Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. Abī ʿAmr al-ʿUranī related—with trustworthy narrators—from her that the Messenger of God ﷺ raised his head during his illness. She said: I took hold of him and supported him against my chest. Usāmah b. Zayd entered with a fresh arāk tooth-stick in his hand. He glanced at it, and I thought he wanted it. I took it, chewed its end with my mouth, and handed it to him. He took it and brought it toward his mouth, but his hand faltered and it fell from his hand.
