The illness of the Prophet ﷺ and his death

Translation

✧ [ The affair of the ladūd ] ʿAbd Allāh said: Then some of his wives gathered to him: Umm Salamah, Maymūnah, and women from among the Muslim women, among them Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays, while his uncle al-ʿAbbās was with him. They agreed to administer a ladūd to him, and al-ʿAbbās said: I shall indeed administer it to him. He said: So they administered it to him. When the Messenger of God ﷺ regained consciousness, he said: Who did this to me? They said: O Messenger of God, your uncle. He said: This is a remedy brought by women who have come from the direction of this land—and he pointed toward the land of Abyssinia. He said: And why did you do that? His uncle al-ʿAbbās said: We feared, O Messenger of God, that you might have pleurisy. He said: That is a disease with which God, Mighty and Majestic, would not afflict me. No one in the house shall remain unless he is given a ladūd, except my uncle. And indeed Maymūnah was given a ladūd while she was fasting, because of the oath of the Messenger of God ﷺ, as a punishment for them for what they had done to him. Al-Ḥākim narrated and deemed it authentic from ʿĀʾishah ؓ that the Messenger of God ﷺ used to suffer from pain in his side and it would become very severe for him. It became so severe that he fell unconscious, and the people rushed to him in alarm, and we thought he had pleurisy, so we administered a ladūd to him. Then the Prophet ﷺ was relieved and regained consciousness, and he realized that he had been given a ladūd, so he said: You thought that God had given it power over me. He would not do that. It is from Satan, and God would not give him power over me. The "ladūd," with a fatḥah on the lām and two unpointed dāls, is to place the medicine in one side of the mouth. What they administered to him was Indian aloeswood, oil, and wars.
