✧ Nursing the Messenger of Allah in the house of ʿĀʾishah [His coming to the house of ʿĀʾishah] Ibn Saʿd narrated from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, from his father, that the Prophet ﷺ was carried in a cloth while he made the rounds of his wives, being ill, apportioning among them. Al-Balādhurī narrated from Ibn Isḥāq, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was taken around to his wives, he was carried in a cloth whose four corners were held by Abū Muwayhibah, Shuqrān, Thawbān, and Abū Rāfiʿ, his freedmen. That was because Zaynab bt. Jaḥsh spoke to him about that, and he said: "I shall go around and make the rounds among you." He stayed in the house of Maymūnah for seven days, sending Asmāʾ bt. ʿUmays to his wives, saying to them: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ finds it difficult to make the rounds among you," and they released him. Ibn Saʿd narrated with a sound chain from al-Zuhrī that it was Fāṭimah who addressed the Mothers of the Believers about that, saying to them: "It is difficult for him to move about." Ibn Isḥāq narrated—with a chain containing someone accused, namely ʿAlī—as in the Ṣaḥīḥ, and al-Bukhārī, Ibn Saʿd, and al-Ḥākim narrated from ʿĀʾishah ؓ the previously mentioned hadith in the first chapter, in which there is: Then he asked permission from his wives to be nursed in my house, and he said: "I am in pain and cannot go around your houses, so if you permit me, I will be in the house of ʿĀʾishah." They permitted him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out [being supported] to my house, between al-ʿAbbās and another man, his feet dragging on the ground, to the house of ʿĀʾishah. In another narration from her in Muslim: He came out between al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAbbās and another man. In another: between two men, one of whom was ʿAlī. In al-Dāraquṭnī: Usāmah and al-Faḍl. In Ibn Ḥibbān: "Barīrah and Nūbah"—with a ḍammah on the nūn and a sukūn, and Nūbah with a wāw then a bāʾ; it is said he is the name of a slave woman, and it is said a slave. In Ibn Saʿd from another route: al-Faḍl and Thawbān. They reconciled these narrations, assuming their authenticity, by saying that his coming out occurred more than once, so those he leaned upon were multiple. Al-Bukhārī and Ibn Saʿd narrated from her that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept asking during the illness in which he died: "Where am I tomorrow? Where am I tomorrow?" meaning the day of ʿĀʾishah. His wives permitted him to be wherever he wished, and he was in the house of ʿĀʾishah until he died with her. She said: "He died on my day, the one on which he used to make the rounds to me." In another narration, his entering—peace and blessings be upon him—her house was on Monday, and his death was on the following Monday. Al-Ismāʿīlī narrated that she said: "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in his illness, he began going around to his wives and saying: 'Where am I?' out of eagerness for the house of ʿĀʾishah. She said: When my day came, it ended." Al-Bukhārī, al-Ismāʿīlī, and al-Barqānī narrated from her that she said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say during his illness: 'Where am I today? Where am I?' eagerly awaiting the day of ʿĀʾishah. When my day came, Allah took his soul between my chest and my neck, and he was buried in my house."
