✧ THE TENTH CHAPTER: On the sending by him ﷺ of Sālim b. ʿUmayr ؓ in Shawwāl of the second year to Abū ʿAfak the Jew, of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf. He was a very old man who had reached one hundred and twenty years. He used to incite against the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and recite poetry. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Who will rid me of this vile one?!" Sālim b. ʿUmayr – who had been present at Badr and at all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and was one of the Weepers, and who died during the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah – said: "I vow to kill Abū ʿAfak or to die in the attempt." So he bided his time, seeking an opportunity to catch him unawares. Then, on a summer night, Abū ʿAfak slept in the courtyard of his house, and Sālim b. ʿUmayr learned of it. He went to him, placed the sword on his liver, then leaned upon it until it pierced the bedding. The enemy of Allah cried out, and some people among those whose hypocrisy had emerged and who held his views came to him. They brought him into his house and buried him. Umāmah al-Murīdiyyah said about that: You deny the religion of Allah and the man Aḥmad? By the life of Him who gave you security, evil is what He grants you. A ḥanīf gave you a thrust at the end of the night – Abū ʿAfak, take it despite your advanced age. Ibn Isḥāq said: The expedition of Sālim b. ʿUmayr to kill Abū ʿAfak, one of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, then of the Banū ʿUbaydah – his hypocrisy had become manifest when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ killed al-Ḥārith b. Suwayd b. Ṣāmit – he said: I have lived a long time, and I do not see among the people a dwelling or a gathering more faithful to covenants and more loyal to those with whom pacts are made among them, when he calls, than the sons of Qaylah in their assembly, who could bring down the mountains and not submit. Then a rider came to them and split them apart, [declaring] permitted and forbidden for various things together. If only you had believed in might or followed Tubbaʿ for kingship.
