The messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his correspondence to the kings and the like
إِرْسَالِهِ ﷺ الْمُهَاجِرَ بْنَ أُمَيَّةَ ؓ إِلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ كُلَالٍ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ هُوَ الْمُهَاجِرُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَخْزُومٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ الْمَخْزُومِيُّ، شَقِيقُ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ لَهُ فِي قِتَالِ الرِّدَّةِ أَسْرٌ كَبِيرٌ بَعَثَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ كُلَالٍ الْأَصْغَرِ ابْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ غَرِيبِ بْنِ عَبْدِ كُلَالٍ الْأَوْسَطِ الْحِمْيَرِيِّ وَأَمَرَهُ أَنْ يَقْرَأَ عَلَيْهِ [الْبَيِّنَةَ 1] لَمْ يَكُنِ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَلَمَّا قَدِمَ عَلَيْهِ قَرَأَهَا عَلَيْهِ، قَالَ لَهُ: يَا حَارِثُ، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ أَعْظَمُ الْمُلُوكِ، قَدْ أَفَادَ أَسْرُكَ، فَخَفْ غَدَكَ، وَقَدْ كَانَ قَبْلَكَ مُلُوكٌ ذَهَبَتْ أَثَارُهَا وَبَقِيَتْ أَخْبَارُهَا، عَاشُوا طَوِيلًا وَأَمَّلُوا بَعِيدًا، وَتَزَوَّدُوا قَلِيلًا، مِنْهُمْ مَنْ أَدْرَكَهُ الْمَوْتُ، وَمِنْهُمْ مَنْ أَكَلَتْهُ النِّقَمُ، وَإِنِّي أَدْعُوكَ إِلَى الرَّبِّ الَّذِي إِنْ أَرَدْتَ الْهُدَى لَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ، وَإِنْ أَرَادَكَ لَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ مِنْهُ أَحَدٌ، أَدْعُوكَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ الْأُمِّيِّ، الَّذِي لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَحْسَنَ مِمَّا يَأْمُرُ بِهِ، وَلَا أَقْبَحَ مِمَّا يَنْهَى عَنْهُ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ لَكَ رَبًّا يُمِيتُ الْحَيَّ وَيُحْيِي الْمَيِّتَ، وَمَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ، فَأَجَابَهُ الْحَارِثُ بِأَنَّهُ سَيَنْظُرُ فِي أَمْرِهِ، وَتَقَدَّمَ فِي الْوُفُودِ مَقْدَمَهُ وَقَوْمَهُ مُسْلِمِينَ. قَالَ أَبُو الرَّبِيعِ: وَتَوْجِيهُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْمُلُوكِ إِنَّمَا كَانَ بَعْدَ انْصِرَافِهِ مِنَ الْحُدَيْبِيَةِ، آخِرَ سِنَةِ سِتٍّ، وَأَوَّلَ سَنَةِ سَبْعٍ، فَلَعَلَّ الْمُهَاجِرَ- وَاللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَعْلَمُ- تَوَجَّهَ إِلَى الْحَارِثِ ابْنِ عَبْدِ كُلَالٍ فَصَادَفَ مِنْهُ يَوْمَئِذٍ تَرَدُّدًا ثُمَّ جَلَا اللَّهُ عَنْهُ الْعَمَى، فَعِنْدَ ذَلِكَ أَرْسَلَ هُوَ وَأَصْحَابُهُ بِإِسْلَامِهِمْ إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَبِذَلِكَ يَجْتَمِعُ الْخَيْرَانِ.
Translation
✧ THE SENDING BY HIM ﷺ OF AL-MUHĀJIR B. UMAYYAH ؓ TO AL-ḤĀRITH B. ʿABD KULĀL AL-ḤIMYARĪ He is al-Muhājir b. Abī Umayyah Ḥudhayfah b. al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. Makhzūm al-Qurashī al-Makhzūmī, the full brother of Umm Salamah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He had a great captivity in the fighting against the apostates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Kulāl al-Aṣghar b. Saʿd b. Gharīb b. ʿAbd Kulāl al-Awsaṭ al-Ḥimyarī, and commanded him to recite to him [al-Bayyinah 1]: "Those who disbelieved among the People of the Book..." When he came to him and recited it to him, he said to him: "O Ḥārith, you are the greatest of kings, your captivity has benefited, so fear your tomorrow. Before you there were kings whose traces have gone and whose reports have remained. They lived long and hoped far, and took little provision. Among them were those whom death overtook, and among them were those whom calamities consumed. I call you to the Lord who, if you want guidance, will not prevent you, and if He wants you, no one can prevent you from Him. I call you to the unlettered Prophet, than whose commands there is nothing better, and than whose prohibitions there is nothing uglier. Know that you have a Lord who causes the living to die and the dead to live, and who knows what the breasts conceal." Al-Ḥārith answered him that he would look into his affair, and his arrival and his people as Muslims have been mentioned previously in the delegations. Abū al-Rabīʿ said: The dispatch of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to the kings was only after his return from al-Ḥudaybiyyah, at the end of the year six and the beginning of the year seven. Perhaps al-Muhājir—and Allah Almighty knows best—went to al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Kulāl and found in him that day some hesitation. Then Allah cleared away from him the blindness, and at that point he and his companions sent word of their Islam to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Thus the two good things come together.
