The messengers of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his correspondence to the kings and the like
إِرْسَالِهِ ﷺ قَيْسَ بْنَ نَمَطٍ ؓ إِلَى أَبِي زَيْدٍ قَيْسِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو [قَالَ عَبْدُ الْكَرِيمِ فِي الْوُفُودِ. وَذَكَرَ الرُّشَاطِيُّ إِنَّ قَيْسَ بْنَ نَمَطِ بْنِ قَيْسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ - وَقِيلَ: قَيْسَ بْنَ مَالِكِ بْنِ نَمَطٍ- الْأَرْحَبْيَّ خَرَجَ حَاجًّا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ، فَوَافَقَ النَّبِيَّ- ﷺ وَهُوَ يَدْعُو إِلَى الْإِسْلَامِ فَأَسْلَمَ، فَقَالَ: هَلْ عِنْدَ قَوْمِكَ مِنْ مَنَعَةٍ ؟ قَالَ: نَحْنُ أَمْنَعُ الْعَرَبِ، وَقَدْ خَلَّفْتُ فِي الْحَيِّ فَارِسًا مُطَاعًا يُكْنَى أَبَا زَيْدٍ قَيْسِ بْنِ عُمَرَ - وَقِيلَ: أَبُو زَيْدٍ عَمْرُو بْنُ مَالِكٍ - فَاكْتُبْ إِلَيْهِ حَتَّى أُوَافِيَكَ بِهِ، فَكَتَبَ إِلَيْهِ. فَأَتَى قَيْسُ بْنُ نَمَطٍ أَبَا زَيْدٍ بِكِتَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَأَسْلَمَ وَأَسْلَمَ بَعْضُ أَرْحَبَ، وَأَقْبَلَا فِي جَمَاعَةٍ إِلَى مَكَّةَ لِيُقْبِلَا بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ، وَذَلِكَ بَعْدَ عَامَيْنِ أَوْ ثَلَاثَةٍ، وَأَقْبَلَتِ الْأَنْصَارُ فِي تِلْكَ الْمُدَّةِ فَعَاقَدُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَمَضَى قَيْسُ ابْنُ نَمَطٍ وَخَلَّفَ أَصْحَابَهُ بِمَكَّةَ، فَلَمَّا نَظَرَ إِلَيْهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ قَالَ: وَفَّى الرَّجُلُ وَأَخْبَرَ بِقَوْمِهِ! فَقَالَ: سَأَكْتُبُ لَكَ كِتَابًا وَأَجْعَلُكَ عَلَى قَوْمِكَ. فَكَتَبَ لَهُ فِي قِطْعَةِ أَدِيمٍ، وَأَسْلَمَ جَمِيعُ هَمْدَانَ، وَقَدِمُوا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَقْدَمَهُ مِنْ تَبُوكَ، وَهُوَ مِائَةٌ وَعِشْرُونَ رَاكِبًا ].
Translation
✧ His ﷺ sending Qays b. Namat ؓ to Abū Zayd Qays b. ʿAmr [ʿAbd al-Karīm said in (the chapter on) the delegations. Al-Rushāṭī mentioned that Qays b. Namat b. Qays b. Mālik—and it is said: Qays b. Mālik b. Namat—al-Arḥabī went out on pilgrimage in the Jāhiliyyah, and he encountered the Prophet ﷺ while he was calling to Islam, so he became Muslim. He (the Prophet) said: "Does your people have any protective strength?" He said: "We are the most protected of the Arabs, and I have left behind in the tribe an obeyed horseman who is called Abū Zayd Qays b. ʿUmar—and it is said: Abū Zayd ʿAmrū b. Mālik—so write to him until I bring him to you." So he wrote to him. Qays b. Namat brought Abū Zayd the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he became Muslim, and some of Arḥab became Muslim, and they came in a group to Makkah to bring the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to Yemen. That was after two or three years, and the Anṣār came during that period and made a pact with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he went out to them. Qays b. Namat went on and left his companions in Makkah. When the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he said: "The man fulfilled and reported about his people!" He said: "I will write for you a letter and make you over your people." He wrote for him on a piece of tanned leather, and all of Hamdān became Muslim, and they came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at his arrival from Tabūk, and they were one hundred and twenty riders.]
