Translation

✧ His ﷺ sending Salīṭ b. ʿAmr ؓ to Hawdhah b. ʿAlī al-Ḥanafī in al-Yamāmah, and he honored him. It was said: He sent him to Hawdhah and to Thumāmah b. Athāl al-Ḥanafī, and Hawdhah did not embrace Islam, while Thumāmah embraced Islam after that. He is Salīṭ b. ʿAmr al-ʿĀmirī, who performed the two emigrations. Ibn Saʿd said: He witnessed Badr and was killed at al-Yamāmah in the year twelve, and it was said: fourteen. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to Hawdhah b. ʿAlī al-Ḥanafī. When Salīṭ arrived before Hawdhah, he honored him and lodged him, and he read the letter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, which contained: In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. From Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Hawdhah b. ʿAlī: Peace be upon whoever follows guidance. Know that my religion will prevail to the utmost reach of the sandal and the hoof. So submit and you will be safe, and I will make yours what is under your hands. When he read it, he returned a reply short of a reply, gave Salīṭ a gift, and clothed him with a garment of Hajar weave. He wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: How excellent and beautiful is what you call to. I am the poet of my people and their orator, and the Arabs hold my station in awe, so make for me some share of the command and I will follow you. Salīṭ then came to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what he said, and he read his letter, and he said: "Had he asked me for a withered piece of ground, I would not have done it. May he perish, and may what is in his hands perish." When he returned from the year of the conquest, Gabriel came to him and informed him that he had died.
