Chapter mentioning the offspring of Abraham (peace and blessings be upon him)
Translation
✧ Among the events in the time of Jacob: What happened to Joseph, upon them be peace. His mother Rachel, when she bore him, Jacob handed him to his sister to nurse him. Mujāhid said: The first affliction that befell Joseph, according to what has reached us, was that his paternal aunt, daughter of Isaac—she was the eldest of Isaac’s children, and to her belonged the girdle of Isaac, which they inherited by seniority; and whoever among her brothers-in-law held it had authority that was not contested, doing with it whatever he wished—when she nursed Joseph, she loved him intensely. Joseph and his mother had been granted half of all beauty, and Jacob also loved him intensely. He said to his sister: “O sister, hand Joseph over to me, for by God I cannot bear him to be out of my sight for an hour.” She said: “By God, I will not leave him for an hour.” Jacob insisted on taking him from her, so she said: “Leave him with me for some days; perhaps that will console me.” When Jacob went out from her, she took the girdle of Isaac and fastened it on Joseph beneath his clothes, then said: “I have lost the girdle of Isaac; see who took it.” It was found with Joseph, so she said: “He is to be given over to me, and I may do with him whatever I wish.” Jacob said: “You and that matter.” She kept him, and Jacob could not take him from her until she died. For that his brothers reproached him in their saying: “If he steals, a brother of his stole before” [12:77]. Other things are also said about his theft.
