Translation
✧ Regarding the delegations of Farwah b. Musayk to him ﷺ Ibn Isḥāq and Muḥammad b. ʿUmar, may Allah Almighty have mercy on them both, said: Farwah b. Musayk al-Murādī ؓ came as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, separating from the kings of Kindah and following the Prophet ﷺ. He said about that: When I saw the kings of Kindah turn away, like the foot whose sciatic vein betrays it, I brought my mount near, heading for Muḥammad, hoping for its bounties and the goodness of its riches. Then he departed until he came to al-Madīnah, and he was a man of nobility, so Saʿd b. ʿUbādah lodged him. Then he went in the morning to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was sitting in the mosque, greeted him, then said: O Messenger of Allah, I am for those of my people who are behind me. He said: "Where have you stayed, O Farwah?" He said: With Saʿd b. ʿUbādah. He used to attend the sitting of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ every time he sat, and he learned the Qurʾān, the obligatory duties of Islam, and its laws. Before Islam there had been between Murād and Hamdān a battle in which Hamdān inflicted on Murād what they intended, until they weakened them on a day called the Day of al-Radm. The one who led Hamdān against Murād on that day was al-Ajdaʿ b. Mālik. Ibn Hishām said: The one who led Hamdān on that day was Ibn Ḥarīm al-Hamdānī. Ibn Isḥāq said: When he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Farwah, did what befell your people on the Day of al-Radm grieve you?" He said: O Messenger of Allah, who could have his people afflicted with the like of what afflicted my people on the Day of al-Radm and not be grieved by that? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Indeed, that only increased your people in good in Islam." On that day Farwah b. Musayk said: We passed by Lifāt while they were sunken-eyed, contending with the reins, inclining toward us. If we prevail, we have been prevailers from old, and if we are overcome, we are not among the overcome. Our nature is not cowardice, but rather our fates and the turn of others. Thus is time: its turns are buckets, its vicissitudes come back time after time. While we were rejoicing in it and content, and had worn its freshness for years, when the returns of time turned it about, and you found those who were envied ground down. Whoever among them is envied for the doubt of time will find the doubt of time treacherous to him. If kings were immortal, then we would be immortal, and if the noble remained, then we would remain. That destroyed the chiefs of my people, as it destroyed the first generations. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed Farwah b. Musayk over Murād, Zubayd, and all of Madhḥij, and sent with him Khālid b. Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ over the alms tax, and he was with him in his lands until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ died.
